Homeworld: Vulcan
The planet Vulcan is part of a double planet grouping that orbits the star 40 Eridani A. The other world is named T'Khut in the Vulcan language, Charis in Federation Standard. It is a class H planet that moves in a trojan relationship with Vulcan, in which both planets revolve around a common point. T'Khut is a monstrous sight in the Vulcan sky. A virtual lifeless cauldron, its active volcanoes and dust storms are visible from the Vulcan surface.
Vulcan is a planet of high surface gravity and temperature and is the home of an advanced and extremely intelligent people. The Vulcanoid species is the second most common in the known galaxy and is considered to be the seed species of the Romulan race as well. They are an ancient and noble race who eschewed their animal passions for a life guided by logic and reason, and have a strong sense of honor. They are socially incapable of outright lies or betrayal, but will sometimes remain silent rather than express a truth that might prove injurious to others. Their devotion to logical thinking came as a result of near self-extermination in ancient times when the Vulcans were a hostile, warrior race whose lives were ruled by strong passions. Surak, the father of Vulcan logical thought, lived during the planet's last great wars. After both sides were devastated, Surak met with emissaries from both sides to establish a workable peace. The philosophy of logic eventually prevailed, and the planet of Vulcan was finally united.
Vulcans are famed for their mental disciplines, which give them control over their minds and bodies. Many Vulcans have telepathy skills; however, these skills are NOT inborn but rather the result of individual discipline and training. The mind-touch is a limited telepathic ability that allows them to share the thoughts and emotions of others. Its use however, requires a lowering of strong personal barriers and serves only as a last resort when other forms of communication have failed. They can enter a healing trance when grievously injured, but may require assistance to leave the trance. Married Vulcans, and those with close familial relationships, may have mindlinks with their loved ones. Eidetic Memory is also the result of discipline and not racial.
Vulcans are non-violent people; however, they are quite capable of efficiently defending themselves. They are devoted to life guided by logic and reason, not emotion and instinct. Even with logic to guide them, much of their social life (and some of their metabolism) is directed by ancient ritual (pon farr, marital bonding, and so on). Young Vulcans are taught the rudiments of music and dance. The Vulcan Nerve Pinch is a commonly taught skill.
A Vulcan's skin has a faint yellowish tint; his ears are pointed and his eyebrows are up-swept. Vulcans otherwise resemble slim humans. Vulcan blood is copper-based. Vulcans reach maturity at the same age as humans, but live much longer -- lifetimes of over 220 are not uncommon. The base age for a Vulcan academy graduate is 22. The Vulcan temperature comfort zone is between 55 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
It would be all too easy to play a Vulcan as a stiff, expressionless automaton. Certainly some Vulcans would behave that way, but so would some humans. It is far more interesting to play the Vulcan as a controlled being. Take note that Vulcans are described as "unemotional," not "emotionless." Vulcans do have emotions, but they are very rigidly controlled. Early Vulcan history was exceedingly violent -- modern Vulcans remember this and keep themselves in close check.
