Background

For the past twenty-three years of his life, Thomas Boyle has been a pilot.

Born and raised in South Carolina he was always interesting in piloting spacecraft. Along with his flying ambitions, his mechanical skills were through the roof. He demonstrated these abilities when building his own fully operational sublight shuttle at the age of sixteen. By seventeen, Boyle had applied for an appointment to the Academy, and was accepted.

Boyle demonstrated exemplary skills in tactical, command, and engineering. His science grades were subpar, however, giving him less then exceptional grades overall. His first year at the Academy, his was given a field commission flying shuttlecraft at Utopia Planitia fleet yards. Upon returning the following semester, Boyle applied for membership to Red Squadron, but was turned down do to his failing science scores.

During his third year, Boyle worked hard to pass his Anthropology class. Boyle began copying his roomate's homework while his roomate was asleep. His roomate, upon finding out what was happening, soon lead to a small brawl in their quarters. Upon being put infront of the Commandant, both cadets did not acknowledge what really happened. As a result, both were put on one year's probation.

Boyle graduated in 2361 at 167 of 168 cadets. His first assignment would be helmsman aboard the Nova class vessel U.S.S. Panther.

The Panther patrolled the Cardassian DMZ and saw very little action. Wanting to get more from his Starfleet career, Boyle requested promotion to the USS Enterprise - D. His request was rejected. He was, however, promoted to Lieutenant JG, and after 4 years on the Panther, transferred to Starbase 127 near the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Boyles tour on the station was more boring to him then his time on the Panther. Boyle soon found himself engrossed in gambling and drinking onboard the station. He would often transfer off of his shift sick. Commander Parsons, Executive Officer of the station, had Boyle reassigned to the Jupitar Flight range in an attempt to get Boyle off of the station and to an assignment where Boyle would have to apply himself more.

Jupitar Flight range was Boyle's happiest assignment thus far, he served there from 2366-69. When he was involved with a serious inncedent. On the McKinnley Station one night Thomas was doing some drinking, and decided to leave. As he was leaving in the new Danube Runabout, he clipped a shuttle pod heading towards the station. Boyle managed to do an emergancy beam out, but the others in the shuttle pod were unable to.

Thomas Boyle was courtmairtled and found guilty of using Federation vehcile while intoxicated, and was sentenced to 1 year on New Zealand. He was forced to resign his commission. Thomas felt very bad about what happen, and spent the next year trying to forgive himself. Upon his release, he was offer a job from the new Bajoran Govermant, as a Civilan pilot for their commerce.

Boyle served in his new job well, coming up and eventually becoming an XO on the cargo ship Faith. In 2372 Boyle reapplied for Starfleet, but was turned down. He went back to working cargo runs. When the Dominon War started Boyle saw his chance. He applied again to Starfleet but was turned down. He then applied to the Marine Corps and was accepted, as a First Lieutenant in VMF-105.

VMF-105's were made up of 12 Raider class fighters. The squadron was in the thick of every campaign. And Boyle used this time to make everything right again. He took on Cardassian fighters and Jem'Hadar battleships.

He was credited with 45 Cardassian fighters, and 3 Battle ships. He was promoted to Captain in 2374, and was captured later that year, when VMF 105 took part on the illfated Jem'Hadar breeding plant mission.

The squadron lost all 12 ships, and 3 were captured. Boyle was wounded badly, and spent the remainder of the War in a Prision Hospital. The other two were killed trying to escape. So by the end of the War in 2375 Captain Thomas Boyle was the sole survivor of his squadron.

In 2376 Boyle was assigned to the Marine Corps Pilot Acadmey, on Mars. Where he served for 7 years. In 2383 Boyle was Promoted to Major and given command of VMF-58. On of the only 4 remaining fighter squadrons in Starfleet, and only one remaining in the Marine Corps. The 58th saw heavy action in the Barien War, and was given a presidental Citation for their actions.

In mid 2384 the Squadron was sent to Supply Base 901, and took up residence with on New Canada. The 54th is equiped with new fighters, that replaced the Raider. Thomas Boyle is jokingly called Pappy cause of his age. However, the call sign sticks.
