Background

Ryan MacLeod was born in 1972 in Durango, Colorado, to a prominent ranching family. He grew up on a working ranch, helping to wrangle cattle and handle ranch chores while still maintaining an outstanding academic record and gaining an athletic letter in wrestling during his high school years. This, combined with his standing as an Eagle Scout and honor student, gained him an appointment to the US Air Force Academy in 1990.

In 1994, Ryan was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force and assigned to an F-15 squadron based at Lackland AFB, Texas. This squadron saw action in Yugoslavia in 1999, Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq, Yemen, and Syria during the Second Gulf War of 2003-2004. By 2006, the S-I war between China and India had started, and Ryan's squadron was assigned to defense of Taiwan. It was here that Ryan, now executive officer of his squadron, distinguished himself in air combat, scoring a number of aerial kills and earning two awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The end of the war allowed Ryan to pursue his ultimate dream: assignment as an astronaut. In 2008, Ryan was accepted into NASA's astronaut program and commanded a space shuttle mission, a trip to an extended-stay lunar laboratory, and a tour on the International Space Station. He was training for Earth's first Mars mission when the Taelons arrived in 2010.

Ryan was at first excited by Earth's first contact with an alien intelligence and when invited by the Taelons to work with their organization he accepted with no hesitation. However, once their true agenda began to reveal itself, Ryan's allegiance quickly switched to the Resistance. Along with Companion Protector Tara Carmichael, Ryan served as a double-agent, aiding the Resistance and those Taelons who sympathized with Earth.

This career ended in 2012, when the Taelon shuttle Ryan and Tara were flying was caught in a spacetime anomaly and brought forward in time to another universe. Cut off from all he'd originally known, the woman he secretly loved attached to someone else, Ryan found himself at loose ends until counsel by the most unlikely of sources--Tara's lover, Jayson Sandoval--allowed him to turn his life around.

In 2385 Ryan MacLeod was approached by Colonel Tarik to help reactivate VMF-58, the Hammerheads fighter squadron. MacLeod immediately accepted the offer and has since become an integral part of the squadron and of station life. He's a frequent patron of the Gunslinger Saloon and has been known to recreate rodeo competitions in the station's holosuites, where he proves himself as adept at riding bulls and busting broncos as he is at flying a fighter. Ryan enjoys good whiskey and a fine cigar (a habit picked up while serving with UN peacekeeping forces during the Cuban Civil War in 2007). Ryan has since been romantically linked with Miranda Mackinnon, a fire control specialist aboard the station, and has taken on the care of her daughter Caprice.

NOTE TO FILE: For exemplary performance as a member of VMF 58 and courage above and beyond the call of duty, and in recognition of his previous military service, Ryan Alexander MacLeod is hereby breveted a Second Lieutenant in the Starfleet Marine Corps. This commission is effective 15 April 2385 and will be made permanent subject to confirmation by Starfleet Command.
