Background

Craig McConaughey was born in 2330 in Belfast, Ireland, Earth to a well- established shipping and shipbuilding family. Originally Craig was to inherit the family businesss, McConaughey Line, one of the largest merchant shipping operations in the Federation. However, Craig set his sights on Starfleet and as a result was disinherited. Very rarely has Craig heard from his family since his enrollment in Starfleet Academy in 2348.

Class work was never his strong suit, but Craig's marks at the Academy were above-average. Apprenticeship in the family business put him in good stead when he was assigned to his cadet cruise. He managed to truly distinguish himself on field assignments, and it was this performance that put him on the fast track for Command when he graduated in 2352.

Craig's first assignment was to the USS Drake, a research vessel sent to explore territory controlled by an unknown race later identified as the Ferengi. His business experience was helpful in negotiations with the Ferengi and set the groundwork for future relations with the merchant race.

As a Tactical Lieutenant, Craig served under Captain Picard aboard the USS Enterprise-D and E, including the Borg attack on Earth. Craig's valor was noted by his superior officers, including Commander William Riker, who would later figure greatly in Craig's career.

McConaughey's loyalties during the Maquis uprising and the Dominion War were solidly on the side of the Federation. As a Lieutenant Commander aboard the USS Leonov and the USS Patton, McConaughey's tactical and command abilities were showcased in a number of actions. By the end of the war, McConaughey was a full Commander and assigned to the General Staff at Starfleet Command.

His career seemed destined to end behind a desk until Admiral William Riker in 2383 named McConaughey his Chief of Staff. Craig took on a troubleshooting role, evaluating ships and captains under Riker's command. He managed to take a position seemingly doomed to make him a pariah amongst his fellow officers and gained from it a reputation for absolute integrity. In 2384, McConaughey was promoted to Captain and given command of Starbase 409. Upon the death of Captain Ryan Evans, McConaughey was sent to command the USS Ronin.

Personality

A lifelong bachelor, McConaughey keeps to himself and has perhaps unfairly earned a reputation for being aloof and cold. Those who come to know him quickly come to his defense, acknowledging him as a fair-minded and infinitely kind man.
