History

Tarik was born on Vulcan in 2349 to Takor and Belaz, Romulan political dissidents who defected to the Federation in the wake of a purge by the Tal'Shiar security forces. Though a citizen of Vulcan, Tarik was brought up according to Romulan tradition and continues to observe his cultural heritage. In 2367, he became the first Romulan to enter Starfleet Academy and graduated in the upper 10% of his class in 2371, despite the assassination of both of his parents by the Tal'Shiar during Tarik's tenure as a cadet. Despite very high scores in Engineering, Tarik accepted a commission in the Starfleet Marine Corps upon learning that the Marines might provide better opportunities for career advancement given his unusual heritage.

As a platoon leader, Tarik distinguished himself repeatedly during the Dominion War. Leading the Marine complement aboard the USS Leonov, Tarik participated in raids on several Cardassian and Dominion outposts. Among his exploits were the liberation of a major Cardassian POW camp in the Taos system, the boarding and intact capture of three Jem'Hadar attack vessels, and the capture of a Jem'Hadar breeding creche and a Ketracel White manufacutring facility. His unit was among the most highly decorated during the Dominion War although it suffered a horrific casualty rate. Tarik himself was captured once and wounded three times during the course of the campaign.

After the Dominion War, Tarik turned down an assignment to the newly-established Federation embassy to the Romulan Empire out of concern that the Tal'Shiar or factions within the Romulan security forces would target him. This, unfortunately, caused a once-brilliant career to become stalled. Tarik, now a captain, was assigned to anti-piracy operations within the Orion Syndicate aboard the USS Ventura and was instrumental in breaking up a major slave-trading ring. Though he was decorated for this action, Tarik did not receive another promotion until his assignment to SB901. Instead, Tarik found himself assigned to a number of unpleasant and undesirable posts including assignment as a battalion executive officer at SB207, a penal colony incarcerating the most violent and unpredictable criminals and security risks in the Federation. An assignment aboard Deep Space Nine at the outbreak of the Dominion's civil war allowed the Bajoran miltary to see Tarik in action. The Bajorans offered Tarik a commission in their forces but Tarik declined in favor of a traning command at the Starfleet Enlisted Facility on Mars.

As a series commander, Tarik oversaw the training of enlisted Marines and played a major role in updating and improving the enlisted training program. His performance in this high-profile post, combined with the payback of a favor done long ago, was largely responsible for his promotion to major and assignment to SB901 in 2384.

Captain's Notes

  • April 2384
    On April 18 2384 Major Tarik, Battalion Commander onboard Supply Base 901, lead and successfully terminated a threat to the Federation Colony on New Canada.

    Despite overwhelming odds, the mission was outstanding success. Major Tarik has proved his worth as able and capable officer. Major Tarik is herby award the title as third in Command of Supply Base 901. In the case of an emergency that leaves Commander Loran or I unable to perform our duties, the Major has full authority in case of that event.

    Also I recommend the Major for early selection for the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

    For merit above and beyond the call of duty Tarik is herby promoted to Full Colonel.
