"Refurbishing"

Author: Lieutenant Commander Garek Loran
Earthdate: January 31, 2384
Location: Supply Base 901

All was quiet in their part of the Briar Patch. No Son'a ships appeared in vicinity to the station, and the USS Hood, at least what was left of her, was sitting in the main bay of the station. Garek, right now, was sitting with his legs folded in front of him, closely examining a few pieces of ODN circuitry ripped out of a bulkhead onboard the Hood. A pile of different tools sat in his lap while he examined the circuitry closely, as if a jeweler would if he was examining a diamond. Repair teams from 901 were hard at work repairing and rearming the ship so she could return to duty. Taking a tool from his lap, he ran it over the circuit. I really do wish that Starfleet would upgrade all of the ships to Bio-Neural Type V circuitry and completely phase out these ODN junctions.

Originally introduced in the early 2370's, Bio-Neural technology allowed starships to process and carry out commands at nearly three times the speed of regular isolinear optical chips and rods. Many upgrades were made in Bio-Neural technology, the latest being the Type V processing system. The Type V completely removed isolinear technology from ship systems, opting for complete Bio-Neural processing. A far technological advance over the Intrepid class starships. However, do to budget cutting in post war times, ships were barely being updated to newer and more standard technology. However, until now, Garek had to appreciate how older ships such as the Hood had been retrofitted, updated, and improved to keep the old Excelsior class ship in commission.

"Commander, could I bother you for a moment?" Garek looked up to see Lieutenant David Rosenthal standing above him. He had a piece of machinery under his arm.

"Looks like you've already done that," Garek looked up with a grin. "What can I do for you?"

"It's this computer interface. I've tried plugging it into about three different power outlets, and I can't get it to work." He handed the console to Garek.

Garek took the console and give it a visual inspection from all angles. Mentally, Garek activated his ocular implant he had received after a mission on the Virgo where he had lost his eye, and began to examine it, magnifying the circuitry to get a better look. "I hope you don't mind me asking, but whom are you?" Garek asked, not breaking his concentration.

"Lieutenant David Rosenthal, 901's computer specialist, Commander."

Garek began chuckling. "A computer specialist that can't figure out why a computer won't work." Garek looked up. "Sorry Dave, nothing personal. Oh, and welcome aboard the station. Sorry I didn't know your name. I haven't met most of the people onboard yet."

"No problem Commander, nice..."

"It's Garek."

"Excuse me sir?"

"It's Garek. My name's Garek, not Commander."

"Sure thing Garek. Figured out what's wrong with it?"

"I think so...." Garek opened one of the rear circuitry panels and began going over it with one of his many tools. After doing that, he closed the panel up, and picked up power cord from one of the open junctions. He then plugged it into the port on the rear of the console and activated it. The computer panel activated. After unplugging it, he handed it back to Rosenthal. "Here you go. It was a problem with one of the fuser circuits, you couldn't have detected it. My occular implant saw the heat differential."

"Thanks Garek," David replied, smiling. He then walked off, returning to where he came from. Turning his attention back to the circuit board, Garek finished his repairs, and slid the panel back into the junction. He then activated the junction and closed up the bulkhead panel.

Returning back to 901, his duty shift had ended. Garek made his way down the corridor on his way back to his quarters. As he turned a corner, he accidentally bumped into Natlie Carter. The lieutenant dropped a slew of PADDs. Both of the two immediately dropped to the ground to pick up the dropped items. "My apologies," Garek said, picking up a few of the PADDs.

"It's my fault, I should've looked where I was going," she replied. She had a slight English accent and had to be in her late 20's. She accepted the dropped PADDs from Garek, and stood up. "Thank you. Oh my, I can't remember your name!"

"Lieutenant Commander Garek Loran. Chief Engineer. Understandable, I just did the same thing to another crew member. It's hard to get all the names of everyone."

"Garek Loran? Where have I heard that name?"

"Maybe it's my impressive reputation as an engineer from the USS Virgo." He smiled.

"No, no, that's not it at all. Ah yes, you were the one with the big ego. That, and I remember reading your name on the crew manifest as having an outdated medical. I expect to see you in Sickbay, Commander." A smile came across her face as she made her way past Garek on down the corridor.

Medical? I could've sworn I had one before I left the Virgo. Damn. Shaking his head, he continued his way down the corridor to his quarters where he would have to think of some way to get out of a medical.
