"Out of the Frying Pan"

Author: Lieutenant Commander Nevar Pol
Earthdate: February 2, 2384
Location: USS Hood

The plan had worked. Pol triggered the hatch release and dropped to the floor of Officers' Lounge on the USS Hood. Looking backwards, he saw the front end of the hollow torpedo casing jutting out from the outer wall of the lounge.

Just as I thought. The self sealing stembolts held. I was worried that the lounge would depressurise from the gaping hole the torpedo had left.

Nevar knew he had to move fast. Although the torpedo didn't explode, the Son'a on the bridge were sure to have detected the hull breach by now. Before long they would be upon him. Checking his chronometer, he knew that Call and the others would have boarded the Hood by now.

Nevar left the lounge and headed towards sickbay. He knew that the Bridge and Main Engineering would be too well guarded for a direct assault. Likewise the Hood's security office, where the largest cache of weapons was kept, would be too well fortified for him to take alone. A direct assualt was out of the question. He had to head for sickbay. Only there could he put his plan into action.

"Computer activate the EMH."

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency," the rather calm hologram, who had just appeared, spoke.

"The Hood has been invaded by a heavily armed force of Son'a. The crew, save two, have all been killed or evacuated. I need you to assist me in retaking the bridge and rescuing the two remaining, as well as an crewmember of Supply Base 901."

"My, that is a mouthful, and you would be?"

"Commander Nevar Pol, Chief of Security: SB901. Right now we may be those crewmans' only hope"

"How can I help Commander?"

"The ship is being dosed with radiation, blocking my ability to get a transported lock on our crewman. I need you to prepare some hyposprays, each filled with image enhancing nanites. They should allow the transporters to get a lock on anyone injected."

"Good plan Commander, but unfortunately I'm a doctor not an engineer. I don't have the schematics for or the capacity to build the nanites you described."

"Understood. Computer, override the EEH program, activate the Emergency Engineering Hologram in Sickbay instead of Main Engineering" A moment later a second hologram shimmered to life.

"Please state the nature of the engineering emergency," said the EEH with an almost Scottish accent to his voice.

Why are all the best engineers Scottish, Nevar thought to himself.

"I want you to work with the Doctor here to create a hypospray that will enhance our ability to get a transporter lock on any individual injected with the spray.

"Aye Commander." With that the two holograms set about their task, leaving Nevar to rig up part two of his plan.

Sitting down at the Chief Medical Officer's desk, Nevar accessed the computer terminal. "Computer, give me access to the internal sensors."

<Please enter access code.>

"Nevar Pol, Lieutenant Commander, Chief of Security, Supply Base 901. Access Code: 1818 Beta"

<Procsessing............that command is incorrect...please re-enter command codes.>

Nevar thought for a minute. Of course the Hood hasn't had its codes updated since its last time in space dock.

"Computer, process: Nevar Pol, Lieutenant Commander, Chief of Security, USS Cavalry, 1818 Beta"

<Command Codes Acknowledged. Accessing internal sensor grid.>

"Computer prepare to fire a five second EM pulse. Target the bridge and the rest of deck one. Five seconds from my mark"

<Electromagnetic Pulse is set, five seconds from audio mark.>

It was long shot, but one that the seasoned bajorian was going to take. The Son'a used disrupters which had long since been banned under Federation law. Tthey had been banned by most civilized races by the middle of this century. The security reports weren't able to identify where the Son'a got such weapons, but none the less it was their weapon of choice. Several times more powerful than a phaser, the dissrupters had no stun setting, only kill. Nevar hoped, and was betting on the fact, that these weren't replicas of such weapons, but in fact the originals themselves. If the disrupters were originals from a century ago, then they wouldn't have a fluctuating EMP shield.

Early in the last century, electromagnetic pulses were used by the Cardassians to disrupt a phaser's ability to fire. In fact the EM Pulse fried and fused any circuit within range. Soon after its use, Starfleet developed and implemented fluctuating EMP shield technology to counter the effects of an EM Pulse. However, even with such technology a weopon hit with a pulse was still disfunctional and offline for a least 45 seconds. Nevar was betting that the Son'a's weapons weren't upgraded with the shield technology, but even if they were he would have 45 seconds. Unfortunately his rifile would also be affected.

At best, It was a long shot.

"Commander, the hyposprays are ready. And in no time at all, if you asked me," called out the EMH, almost proud of his work.

"Good," Nevar took the sprays and immediately injected himself with one, putting the others into his side pouch bag. Before the hologram could continue patting himself on the back, Nevar spoke, "Computer deactivate the EMH"

Turning to the EEH, Nevar filled the hologram in on his plan.

Nevar braced himself. Taking a deep breath he readied himself for what was next. Since leaving Sickbay, Pol had crawled through a series of Jeffrey's tubes and systems ducts and was now positioned just inside the access hatchway to the bridge.

Nevar reached out with his limited Betazoid abilities. They weren't strong enough to pick up thoughts but if he concentrated hard enough he usually could pick up strong emotions. He definitely felt something - TENSION.

Just as Nevar prepared himself, a hypospray in each hand, the EEC activated the EM pulse.

The bridge was filled with tension. No one spoke, and only the Son'a commander moved, slowly pacing back and forth.

Out of no where came a blood curdling war cry, but to the Son'a it seamed to come from nowhere and everywhere as Pol's klingon war cry echoed throughout the bridge.

Stunned at first, the Son'a didn't know how to respond. This gave Pol the time he needed. He scanned the bridge and noticed that the prisiners were no where to be found. He did notice the gaurd standing outside the Captain's Ready room though. That's where they are!

By the time he had completed his task, the Son'a had regained there senses. Reaching for their disrupters they fired at the Nevar.

Nothing happened, much to the chagrin of the Son'a. Pol used this second moment of confusion to head towards the Ready Room. Unfortunately (for them) several Son'a stood in his way.

Pol's Betazoid abilities were extremely limited, but the young veteran knew how to make the most out of them. Although unable to read minds, Pol's psionic talent did allow him to almost instinctually know what and where his opponent(s) wouldl attack. Save for the Ferengi and the Borg, this gave Pol an almost unfair advantage against most sentient foes in hand to hand combat.

After a moment it was over, Nevar was at the door to the ready room and several Son'a lay on the deck of the bridge.

With a quick spinning kick to the head, Pol took out the guard who was still attempting to make his disrupter work. He ran into the ready room and sealed the door behind him.

"Hi," he said to the three captives. "Lietenant Commander Nevar: Supply Base 901." He threw one of the hypos to Greg Harper. "Inject yourself and Ryan," he said as he gave a dose to Captain Jennings. "It will allow the station to lock on to our signals and transport."

He tapped his Comm badge but he still couldn't contact the station to tell them to transport the four away.

"Well, it looks like we need to get out of here before we can get out of here." Thye could here the bangin on the doors and walls as the Son'a attempted to enter the room. "Any suggestions?"
