Alicia had spent the morning walking every level of SB901 and was glad to see that they were going to end up in the conference room. Inside, Commander Kitty Mallory waited quietly. Alicia walked to the side table and poured herself a large glass of ice water and took a seat to the right of the Captain. "Ma''am, you have a nice station."
"Thank you." She said with a wink at K'Tag. Then added, "the stewards will be bringing lunch in shortly. Sorry for the rush in your orientation but the situation in his quadrant is giving us little breathing space and I want you on line ASAP. K'Tag will be you're training officer so you will report directly to him."
K'Tag drew a cup of Raktajino from the replicator and took a seat and slid a folder with half a dozen PADD discs. "You're study materials are there. We will meet for Holodeck training sessions, and you will stand watches on the bridge, and basically shadow my movements." He paused and looked at the Captain as the stewards brought in and set up lunch.
"The Chief Tactical Officer is the vessel's gunman. He is responsible for the ship's weapon system, and is also the CO's tactical advisor in Starship Combat matters. Very often Tactical Officers are also trained in ground combat and small unit tactics." K'Tag grunted and then continued, "There is much more to tactical than simply overseeing the weapons console on the bridge. Tactical maintains the weapons systems aboard the ship/starbase, maintaining and reloading photons magazines."
Captain Kitty interjected, "Tactical planning and current Intelligence analysis (if no Intelligence operatives are aboard) is also overseen by the Tactical department--however, SB901 has an intelligence team. You know, Lt. Commander Katianna Nadira."
K'Tag continued, "The tactical officer is a department head and a member of the senior staff, responsible for all the crew members in his department and duty rosters, for the time being those duties are still in my hands until such time as you are fully up to speed." He saw her nod and was well aware of her service records. "I understand that you will have several roles...tactical officer, communications, and Special Ops. Most tactical officers also have a security background and this position is no different--on away missions or diplomatic events the special op's group will provide security and VIP bodyguards for the command staff. Tactical officers play a role in the security and safety programs here on the station."
They took half an hour to eat lunch and the captain excused herself and K'Tag started in on the weapons the station had at its disposal.
That night in quarters Lt. Commander Lee and Alicia talked about their day and the new people they'd met on station.
