It was one of the few days when Jayme had absolutely nothing scheduled. She looked around at the PADD and stack of modules and decided that studying could wait. She was wearing shorts and a T-shirt and was limbering up in the living room. Nathan had been on shift for three hours and wouldn't be back for about ten more. "Hmmm." She tapped her combadge, "Captain Alcon to Lt. Vansen."
[Vansen here.] Shannon said looking up from her meal in the mess hall.
"I'm looking for someone to spar with, you game?" Jayme said taking a sip of her coffee.
[Sure, meet me in the gym in twenty minutes.] Shannon picked up her tray and dumped it, on her way back to her room to get work out clothes.
Jayme left her quarters and ran the blue line one complete circuit equal to 440 meters. She was in the gym and had signed out a matted area and ran into Major Jackson who was just finishing up some solo work. "Morning Sir," she said with a smile.
"Ms. Alcon. You're in a good mood."
With a shrug, she said, "Yeah its my day off and Lt. Vansen is coming to join me for a little workout.
"Well, I have watch tonight...take care." He said, as he headed for the locker room.
Shannon jogged up and rested with both hands on her hips and laughed. "I'm glad you called." She stretched her arms and her spine and then added, "Oh, I saw Talia and she's going to join us as referee." A few minutes later Talia arrived breathless.
Jayme and Shannon took their places on the mat and started in while Talia watched and called out of bounds, two illegal contacts, and then a point for Jayme. For the next thirty minutes they sparred back and forth trading blows. Both were strong blockers, but Shannon liked to use her legs. Shannon attempted a leg sweep but got tangled with Jayme's bad leg and both women went to the deck. Jayme rolled around on her back holding her knee for a moment. "Illegal contact..." Talia said moving in to check both women.
Five minutes later, Jayme favoring that leg made several rapid moves, only to be blocked and clipped up side the head with a roundhouse kick which dropped her to the deck. Moments later she became aware that several of her corpsmen were knelt down beside her. She attempted to sit up, and the world grayed out and she rolled onto her side and rested with her head down on her outstretched arm. "Oh, shit." She said making eye contact with SGT Berke.
"Emergency medical transport to sickbay." Berke said touching his combadge.
"No...." Jayme felt the world gray out and then the transporter beam hit them and she opened her eyes and recognized sickbay. Several hands grabbed onto her and lifted her onto the biobed. She closed her eyes and fought the nausea.
A warm familiar voice said, "Jayme can you roll on to your back."
"Sure, as long as you stop shaking the bed." She said with her eyes closed, she rolled flat. She opened her eyes and saw Dr, Barnes standing there. "Where's Nathan, John?"
"In surgery. Jayme follow my finger with your eyes only," He nodded, and dimmed the lights in that corner of the exam room. Using an ophthalmoscope he checked her eyes. Come on Jayme, you know the drill. Stay with me and squeeze my hands. Good. Now push with your feet. Good. What was the last thing you remember doing?"
Jayme took a deep breath and thought about it. "I went running and met with Lt. Vansen to spar."
John nodded, and asked, "What day is it?"
"Was my day off?" She reached up and felt the lump on her right temple, rolled onto her elbow and sat up but just about fell off the biobed when SGT Berke caught her and said, "Oh, no you don't. Just lay back down Captain."
Vansen and Talia both entered sickbay and walked over to the biobed where they saw Berke. "I'm sorry Jayme." Shannon said stepping between Berke and the bed. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I have a headache and a lump on the side of my head." Jayme took the ice pack the nurse handed her and rested it against her temple, and asked, "Oh John, can you look at my right knee--I think I tore something again." She closed her eyes and could feel him palpating it and moving it around. "Eve, can you ice and elevate this knee. Give her 5mg Terakine and 2mg Inpedrazine." He picked up a PADD and walked over and looked at down at her, "You're a mess." He noticed that Jayme didn't argue with the medication or the nurse. "I'll let Nathan know you're here...if you need surgery on the knee it will have to wait until you're cleared from the concussion."
"I've been cleared of the concussion." She said watching him chart.
"Yes, you were cleared of that one...but according to my scans you have another one."
She dropped her hand, and lifted her head, "Ugh, I answered your questions...I know who, what, when and where..."
"Jayme, save your breath." He put the bad down, and moved her hand back up to hold the ice pack against her head, "Keep that there."
Jayme sighed, and looked over at Talia and Shannon, and said, "Shane, your ass is mine when I'm back on my feet."
"We've got flight duty in an hour...are you going to be ok?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine. I don't have a concussion and when Nathan looks at the scans he'll over turn that 'weakest links' diagnosis. Have a good flight."
About an hour later Nathan watched Jayme sleep. He repeated the scan and shook his head as he sipped a cup of juice. He sat down in the chair beside the bed and looked at the scan of the knee and saw that it was just wrenched, but she had a hell of a concussion--again.
"Thanks for treating her when she came in John." Nathan said sitting the cup on the floor and running his fingers through his hair. "She's difficult to deal with at times like this..." He said resting he elbows on his knees.
"She didn't give me to hard a time...except to argue with the concussion diagnosis." Dr Barnes crossed his arms over his chest and said, "she didn't even argue with me about the medications."
Jayme spent the night in sickbay and was released to quarters the next day.
