"Looking Around"

Author: Ensign Greg Parker / Lieutenant Commander Nevar Pol
Earthdate: March 8, 2384
Location: "New Canada"

Nevar washed his face in the cramped ready room sink. Looking into the antique polished mirror, he wondered if returning to duty....to command....had been the smartest thing he had ever done.

<Beep Beep,> rang the door chime. Drying his face, Nevar said solemnly "Come."

Lieutenant Nugent, sitting in on this mission at ops, came in. Nevar sat behind the desk, which matched the mirror in age. "Call has begun transporting the colonists as ordered. Parker 's leading a team mapping out water flows. Razek is helping the Engineering Corps set up their equipment."

"And you Lieutenant? What's keeping you busy?" Nevar asked aimlessly, as he reviewed the PADD in front of him.

"You are," The Trill counselor replied gently. Nevar knew a conversation was coming. After waving Nugent to sit down, he walked over to the replicator "Bajorian tea, two cups, hot." Bringing the replicated tea, Nevar joined the attractive officer, choosing to sit on the other side of the desk. "Commander, I know that this is hard for you. Command is always a heavy burden no matter the mission. Add to that your past, and it doesn't take a Betazoid to realize the pressure you are putting yourself under. I just want you know that Commander Wallace believed in you, as did Commodore Picard and of course Tim. Nevar....Pol, there is nothing I can say that you haven't heard a million times before, so all I'm going to say is....well......if you ever want to talk about it, I'm here."

Nevar saw the genuineness in her eyes. This was someone to whom taking care of people wasn't just her job, it was her passion. A passion which reminded Nevar of his mother. Standing, tea cup in hand Nevar faced outward through the port window and gazed as the turning planet beneath. "Thank you Counselor. I will keep you offer in mind." Knowing the conversation was over, Nugent left resume her station on the bridge.

On the Surface...

Three starfleet personel began their task of looking around there current postion and mapping. Ensign Parker was excited about this, his first away mission and on a remote planet basicly uncharted. Yeoman Harper was with him, he carried a phaser rifle and field pack, Harper was the one not wanting to be cought unprepaired.

The area where they had been beamed was a large clearing some what three kliometers wide and 12 kilomters long before reaching a dense forest. Parker scanned the area and picked up traces of water about 13 kilometers from their current postion. Harper pulled out his tricorder and started mapping the area. Harper saw Garek working on a Solar power generator.

"Looks like we have a few hours of exploring before we reach this water I'm picking up," Parker said in a very enthusastic voice.

"Well then sir lets get moving then hey." Harper said walking ahead towards the forest.

The Forest was very much like that on earth in the very early middle ages before developers ruined earth's resources. Trees were anywhere from 2 meters tall to 300 meters tall. Most apeared to ressemble red wood trees. The floor of the forest was rather clear of under brush. Birds were also herd in the trees. Temprature was rather comfertable at this time of the morning around 59 degrees Feregnheit. Also the sound of small forest dwellers were herd scurring at the sound of foot steps. Parker loved this place it seemed so clean and fresh, unlike any place he had been before or since.

The two walked for about an hour and decided to take a break and get something to eat out of their field packs.

"So this place will soon be a first federation colony past the Nebula. People are going to like this place when they visit it." Parker said drink from his canteen.

"Well sir you better remember it like this sir, cause in about one years time it won't look the same."

"Harper I hope your wrong."
