"A Little Bit of Exploration: Need to Know"

Author: Lieutenant Paul Deveraux
Earthdate: March 12, 2384
Location: Volax IV

To say the results thrown up by the computer were disturbing was an understatement. Paul could not have understood why it had happened, or even if it was correct. It seemed entirely unplausable. There was however, only one way for him to find out wether this was true or not. He once more set out for the sacrifice chamber, this time making sure he took only what he needed.

He entered the chamber and scanned the area with his tricorder. As he expected, it didn't pick up anything, but he looked around the room and saw what he was looking for. He walked towards teh body of the creature that had attacked him th night before. It truly was a hideous sight. Paul didn't want to touch it, not knowing wether or not it was still alive, however, the smell and the look of it put Paul off touching it even if it was dead. Just to make sure, he scanned it once again with his tricorder. This was one thing that still remained puzzling in this nor unravelling mystery. Paul put a hypospray to its neck which contained a strong sedative. One powerful enough to sedate a Klingon for a week. He still didn't want to touch it so he took his claw in his fingers and stabbed it into the creatures arm similarly to the way a raptor would have done to kill its prey. He then proceeded to drag it back to the shuttle.

Once there he placed it in a containment field and once more left the shuttle. He headed off towards another structure the runabouts sensors had picked up and the writings he had discovered the day before identified as being burial chambers.

Tomb raiding was not something Paul particularly liked to do, he was all for studying ancient ruins, but he felt that the dead should be left to rot in piece, however, in this case, he needed to know if the theory he now had was correct, and for this, he needed a Volaxian corpse. He entered the structure which was remarkably poorly constructed in comparison to the sacrifice chamber. Obviously, the Volaxians weren't very concerned with what happened to their people once they had died. Maybe they didn't believe in an after life.

Paul walked in and scanned the area. This time he actually got readings. These were definately native to this world, they shared many common genetic markers with the other inhabitants of the world. Paul walked over ot one of the poorly constructed coffins and prised it open with the butt of his rifle. Inside lay the severely decomposed body of a Volaxian. He knew that if he were to try and carry the whole body, it would just crumble away and break, so he smapped off a finger and was on his way.

Back at the runabout, he began the tests. He took a sample from the other creature and input the data into the computer. The results were confirmedwhat the computer had come up with earlier that morning. The Volaxians and these unscanable creatures were thh same thing! Their DNA is identical!
