"Ghosts at Rest"

Author: Lietuenant Mikarsh Varel / Lieutenant Kassia
Earthdate: June 8, 2384
Location: USS Arizona - A

Mikarsh looked at the monitor on his desk. He closed the Starfleet Database; he had read all he could about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He rose and went to the replicator.

"Trill Tea," he told the computer. Moments later a small silver cup and saucer materialized on the replicator, the liquid inside was a dark purple color. He returned to his desk and slowly sipped his drink.

The doors to sickbay opened and a tall, beautiful woman walked in.

"Ah, lieutenant. I thought I might see you again," Dr Varl said as he saw Kassia enter sickbay.

"So, what can you do for me Doc?" she asked, her green eyes gazing at him hopefully. She knew he was fully aware of her present condition.

Mikarsh looked at her for a moment, his eyes followed the line of spots down either side of her face, his brow furrowed for a moment.

"How have you been sleeping, Kassia?" he asked her, "It is a common symptom for sufferers of PTSD to have sleepless nights, interspersed with Nightmares."

"Doc, you hit the nail on the head. I've so much trouble sleeping lately. And when I do get to sleep...I just relive the interrogation over and over again. Its not as bad as it was, but they still get pretty intense . . . Can you do anything about it?" She looked into his blue eyes as she pleaded for help. It had taken this long for her to accept the fact that she couldn't do it alone and recover. That she did need help.

"Indeed there is." He told her as he rose and went to the Medical Cabinet. "I am going to prescribe 10cc's of Morphozine." He filled a hypospray with a light green liquid. "All you have to do is inject yourself in the common artery in your neck before you go to bed and you will sleep well and will not experience any 'Higher state' Dreams. You will wake up feeling very refreshed."

She took the Hypospray from him and looked it over carefully, her mind going through the information stored there about sleep and dream-states. "Will I still enter REM sleep? I thought you had tohave REM or it can have very nasty side-effects."

"You are correct, Kassia, it can be very nasty. But do not worry, you will still enter the Rapid-eye movement state of sleep." He told her. "Just drop by sickbay each night and I will give you a new vile of Morphozine."

"Thanks, Doc!" she smiled and relaxed in her chair, with a gentle sigh. Her green eyes filled with a certain amount of relief. "Sounds like what I need most right now is a good night's sleep."

"Yes you do, but that is not all you will require to return to full health. Normally I would also prescribe sessions with the station's counselor. But you are the Station's counselor, so I will be helping you with sessions of therapy." He told her.

Kassia nodded. "Very well doctor, if you feel it's necessary." She knew this was something she would have to face. She had read it in her studies and personal research, but she had kept hoping that she wouldn't need the therapy. However, she had been in denial about it and now knew it.

"It is more than necessary Kassia." He tapped a few buttons on his console "Now, since we will not be at our destination for a few more hours, I suggest you go to your quarters and inject yourself with half of the vile and get some rest."

"As you wish, Doctor," said Kassia as she rose from her seat. "Thank you for your time." She smiled, her green eyes reflecting her appreciation of his help.

"Any time, Kassia, I will schedule a time for our first session." He told her.

"Thanks," she replied as she left sickbay.

Mikarsh finished the last of his tea, filed a medical report, replaced the cup into the replicator and headed for the bridge.
