"Captain By Default"

Author: Lieutenant JG David McAllister
Earthdate: June 27, 2384
Location: USS Valiant

The Valiant was speeding toward the location of the Jem H'adar Relay Station. The First Officer, now turned Captain was sitting in the command chair dishing out orders to the crew. The Valiant reached it's co-ordinates and dropped out of warp. The view screen changed to show the scene outside the ship. Ohhh shit thought Dave. There were ten battle bugs and three Jem H'adar battle cruisers waiting outside a Nebula.

"What are they doing?" asked the replacement science officer. Dave recognised the voice and spun around, it was Brex. She gave him a quick smile and he turned back to the view screen.

"The Arizona is in there" stated Commander Cogger. "The way I see it, we have two choices. We go for the relay station now and finish it off before the Jem H'adar know what hit them. The other option, take some of the heat of the Arizona so she can escape."

"Sir, by taking out the relay station, wouldn't the Jem H'adar come after us anyway, there by taking pressure off the Arizona and buying them time to escape?" asked Brex

"Good thinking Ensign. Helm, set course for the relay station. Lieutenant Loog, this is what we are going to do." said Cogger walking over to tactical.

Five minutes later, all was ready and the Valiant was heading for the relay station. With refractive shields up, the Valiant moved into various positions around the relay. and launched small magnetic mines onto critical areas of the stations hull.

"Captain, I'm detecting a cruiser and two bugs heading our way." said Brex.

"What? That's not meant to happen. Damn! we must have been found out some how. Ok, people, in less than a minute, we're going to be under fire, lets try and keep cool, concentrate on our jobs, and we'll get through this fine.

"Sir, the last of the mines has been placed" announced Loog.

"Good, Mcallister...." but he couldn't finish his sentance... the ship rocked violently as it was hit by torpedoes. Dave was about to maneouveur the Valiant away from the relay station, but he felt a sudden pain and blacked out.

As Dave opened his eyes, he was greeted with a bridge in chaos. There were crew members running round trying to put out fires and treat the wounded. He looked up at one of the doctors who just revived him. He looked over at the first officer who had medics all over himm. He looked back at the doctor who shook his head.

"Your in command" he said

David pulled himself up onto his seat at the helm. He looked about and assessed the damage. Most of the consoles were blown out and most of the crew killed.

"Lieutenant McAllister, sir" started the operations chief who had pulled himself out from under a bulkhead. "That last shot from the Jem H'adar vessel completely knocked out most of our computer systems. Everything is going to have to be manually operated from now."

"The warship is coming in for another pass" called the tactical officer.

Dave spun round on his chair and looked at the view screen. The large Jem H'adar cruiser was heading directly at them. Another volley of torpedoes was launched and the Valiant rocked violently and most of the systems that werent already out, blew out.

"Life support is offline sir!" called the ops officer.

"Get on it!" yelled Dave. "Loog! target that ship, we aren't going to go down without a fight!"

"What do you have in mind sir?" asked the Zakdorn tactical officer.

"You'll see" smiled Dave.

Outside, in the vastness of space, the small Defiant class vessel hurtled toward the large warship.

"We're on a collision course!" shouted the tactical officer in dismay

"No we're not" replied Dave. "Just fire when I say."

Outside, the Valiant came closer and closer to the Jem H'adar ship. The Jem H'adar ship fired phaser after phaser at the small Federation ship, but nothing was going to stop it now. Soon, the Valiant was too close for the Jem H'adar to accurately target them, just before collision, the ship dipped sharply, and flew underneath the mighty attacking vessel so close that it got inside the ships shielding.

"NOW!" yelled Dave.

The Valiant launched all torpedoes and phasers that it could straight into the underbelly of the cruiser. The weapon fire ripped into the heart of the ship and with a large creaking groan, the ship split in two and exploded in a large fireball, by which time the Valiant was already speeding away a all the speed it could muster.

"I got to remember that one Lieutenant" said Loog.

"Thats if you live through this. Look sharp, we got another heading in our direction."

"Same again?"

"No, this time I think we'll try something different. Do we still have those magnetic mines aboard?"

"Yes"

"Dump them all, now."

"But they'll be attracted to our hull at this range!" protested Loog.

"Ahh, but I don't plan to let them get close enough. Just dump the mines, I'll do the rest."

Loog reluctantly released the mines that instantly became attracted to the Valiant. Quickly, the small ship accelerated and flew away, mines in tow. Swiftly coming about, the Valiant hurtled toward the oncoming Jem H'adar ship. At the last moment, the Valiant pulled up sending the mines hurtling into the hull of the Jem H'adar ship. Explosions rippled across the ship sending hull fragments into space. The now lifeless hulk, yawed and began drifting.

"And that makes two!" yelled Dave.

"If you want to make that three, the Arizona is under heavy fire sir. Should we assist?"

"You bet your ass we assist! Setting course now! Detonate the mines!"

The mines went off blowing the realy station to pieces. The crew watche don the view screen and the bridge lit up from the explosion.

"Choke on that" said Dave.
