"Has there been any word from the Remington?" Captain Mallory asked her communications officer.
"None since the ship departed four days ago, ma'am. They just stopped transmitting when they reached the Shyrock's last known position."
"Send a message to Starfleet Command, flash priority," Mallory ordered. The communications ensign started the message recording. "This is Captain Mallory, Starbase 901. One Intrepid-class vessel and one merchant vessel has been lost in this sector at coordinates to be transmitted. Request a Galaxy-class or larger vessel to investigate. Given hostile situation in sector I am ordering a sector-wide alert, condition Beta."
Personal Log, Commander Garek Loran, stardate unknown. The chronometer aboard the Remington has been frozen for what I would estimate to be approximately 96 hours. Ship's systems are stable and operational with the exception of the warp drive and communications system. We've found the Shyrock; it appears to be in good health but we've been unable to contact them.
"Any idea where we are?" he asked Ming. Ming Wang and Ciara Tierro had accompanied Garek aboard the Remington because he needed a science officer and a medical officer, and they needed transport back to the Ronin. Kim Tycho was with him as well, at the helm station; she had her own reasons for accompanying Garek.
"I've not been able to get a fix on our position since we discovered the Blue Anomaly. Our sensors appear to be detecting infinite space, which is what one would expect of the natural universe. However, no matter how far away we attempt to go, we end up in exactly the same position as we started," Ming replied.
"I've tried to get us as far as .05 lightyears from the Shyrock, but no luck," Kim added. We always end up exactly where we started, even though the computer claims we've traveled that far."
"What the heck is going on?" Ciara asked.
"I may have an idea," Ming said. "We're in an N-dimensional Klein Bottle. A surface that curves in on itself. Think of a wormhole twisted into a Mobius strip."
"Okay, that sounds like a reasonable description. I've only heard about this once before. The USS Ilion was trapped in such an anomaly years ago. But how do we get out -- and where did this come from?"
"The computer doesn't have access to Starfleet's databanks. The exact details aren't available, but we can still use the Remington's computer to try and work out a solution," Ming said.
"Let's get to work," Garek replied as he began accessing the Remington's computer. "Kim, see if we can't attempt a manual rendezvous with the Shyrock. Ming, start collating all the data you've collected so far; Ciara, you can help him here, too. I also want you to get an inventory on consumables aboard this ship. I want an idea of how long we can last in this thing."
