"Trials and Tribulations"

Author: Lieutenant James Reynolds & Captain Kitty Mallory
Earthdate: April 11, 2385
Location: Runabout and SB901

The trip had been a long one. At the helm of the runabout sat Reynolds. He could barely keep his eyes open, much less manage a ship, but he was close to the starbase now, and continued on.

After being released from the USS Relativity, Reynolds had been assigned to Starbase 901 against his will. He had heard stories of how the base was outdated, compared to new stations of the time. Perhaps rumors.... perhaps not...

It had been a hard time leaving the Relativity, as he left behind a girlfriend and many life long best friends, and to top all that, he knew of no one on 901. He erased the thoughts from his mind, and carried on imputing commands into the runabouts console.

After getting clearance to dock at the station, James quickly put in instructions into the runabouts helm system to dock. It seemed forever to get the clearance and even longer for the actual dock. Finally the moment came... the door to the runabout opened.

Shaking the hand of a man who greeted him, he made haste to get to the Commanding Officers ready room. It had been a long trip, and the sooner he meet the Captain, the sooner he could go to his new quarters and take some rest time.

Walking unto the bridge, he saw a room off to the side. He walked to the door and pressed the chime.

"Enter," the Captain called out as she hunched over her desk going over several reports. One of which was the transfer of her Chief Engineer. She had seen the report the day before but was going over it once again, along with the profile of her new Chief of Engineering. As she looked at the officer's face, her brows raised being that the officer walking in was her new Chief of Engineering.

A look on the Captains face showed him that she was somewhat surprised with him entering. "Lieutenant James Reynolds, Reporting as ordered", came from his lips. He continued to think... 'as ordered', bah! If it wasn't for orders he wouldn't be here. The Captain looked back to him

"I'm sorry you're not entirely pleased to be here," she replied promptly. "But orders are orders. Though I'm not entirely sure why Starfleet sent you to me and transferred my Chief of Engineering elsewhere." She gazed into his blue eyes, sizing him up and carefully making her first assessment.

Who was she? What kind of person talked to him like that, he thought? He had been rumored to be the best engineer in the galaxy, and she was complaining. Deciding not to get off on the wrong foot, he changed his thought track. "Ma'am, I'm here under orders, but I will do the best of my ability even if I don't agree with my posting. I suppose Command figured me more fit than your other officer," he popped back to the captain. He waited for the captain to see what she would say.

Kitty finally smiled. "You are one of the best in Starfleet, by the way, Lt. Reynolds. Since we are in an area that's probably going to be a war zone at some point is most likely why you're here, but as long as I know you're going to do your best here, no matter what, there won't be a problem. That's what I needed to hear. We have a lot of good officers... A lot of good people on this Station, and they are going to depend on you to keep it going."

Nods simply. Indeed, a lot was riding on his shoulders... but he believed he could carry the load if needed. He was going to be a valuable asset to the crew, in that he was sure, but would he fit in was what pondered his mind. He pushed the thought away.

Kitty was just about to go back to her PADD when she looked back up at him. "One more thing, there are several other telepaths aboard this station. If you go to Kassia's Kave of Curiosities and Mystery, I'm sure you'll make at least one friend. Now why don't you go get settled in. Dismissed. Oh and welcome aboard," she added with a gentle smile that made her green eyes sparkle.

~Thank you Captain. You wont be let down~ Reynolds stands, and walks out of the Captains Ready Room.

She watched him for a moment more knowing he wouldn't let her down if he could help it. Finally, she returned to the PADD in her head and a report that was demanding her attention.
