Description
The original Nova class was designed as a modern replacement for the long-serving Oberth class science vessel. The requirement called for a ship capable of making relatively short duration missions; Starfleet intended to use these ships in the large unexplored areas between Federation controlled space, missions which would typically be staged out of Starbases.
For the Combat Refit version, all the extra science labs and sensor arrays were removed, making room for heavier weapons and defensive systems. Deck Two was converted into a large pass-through hangar bay for quick deployment and retrieval of the ship's complement of Hammerhead fighters.
