"A True Hero"

Author: Lieutenant JG Hancock
Date: August 16, 2384
Location: Sickbay / Engineering

The Ronin's sickbay shook extremely hard from the explosion of the Kelvan weapon. Lights and patients were thrown off. Sparks flew from a few control panels. It was dark for a few minutes, then the emergency lights came on.

William stood up after being thrown to the deck after the explosion. He helped a few patients that were in sickbay back into their beds. Junora helped him out.

[Doctor Hancock.] The comm channel beeped.

William quickly pressed his comm badge. "Hancock here."

[Listen, the last explosion tore up Main Engineering. We have reports of mass casualties down there. You need to send your teams there now. Ryan out.]

"Understand." Will turned to his coworker and gave a smile. "Listen, I need two medkits and a simms beacon. I'll triage the injured and then send them to you in the order of priority," William said walking towards the door which opened. Junora gave a disapproving look and handed her boss the equipment he asked for.

The hallway was somewhat damaged; sparks were flying out of some of the conduits. A few bulkheads had fallen. The lighting was flickering on and off. William took a brisk walk towards the turbolift, where he ran into an Ensign wearing gold. The Ensign wasn't much younger than Will. "Sir, the turbolift won't go past deck 7."

*Bloody hell!* Will thought as he stepped into the turbolift. I guess I'll have to use the Jeffries tubes past deck 7. The trip to deck 7 took only a few minutes. After stepping off the turbolift, the Ronin shook hard. Will suspected that the Kelvans had fired once more onto the ship.

He quickly made his way to a Jeffries tube and almost slid down the ladder. He could feel the few plasma fires burning in the ship. He started to sweat as he found an exit hatch that read Main Engineering. Will tried to open it using the control panel but the door didn't open. Will pried the door open and stepped out onto the Engineering deck.

Main Engineering was a wreck. Plasma coils hung from the ceiling. The warp drive was dangerously glowing bright blue. Coolant was in the beginning stages of leaking. Will pulled out his tricorder and began to scan for life signs. He read four life signs near the entrance to Engineering. A few collapsed bulkheads were almost in his way. He had to crawl over them and found the four injured Engineers. Will began to treat their injuries and stabilize them.

Most of them had burns to their hands and arms. Will gave an injection to relieve the pain for them. He then pulled out a couple of field bandages, as another explosion rocked the Ronin. Hancock quickly bandaged their hands and arms and began to look for an exit. Remembering his training, he walked over to the panel on the wall next to the main exit/entrance doors. Upon seeing it he quickly pulled the panel off and was thrown to his left side by another explosion. Shaking it off Will crawled to his knees and reached into the panel and pulled a handle and the doors cracked open. Seeing the doors open about 10 centimeters, Will ran over to the doors and pulled them apart with all his strength, giving a yell as he did it. As he opened the door he heard and felt a pop in his left shoulder. "Damn!" Will screamed as he realized he had just dislocated his shoulder slightly. "No time to feel pain," saying to himself aloud.

The doors opened up about 5 meters. It was a big enough opening to get the injured people out. He ran to one of the injured engineers that was passed out and reached under both of his arms and dragged him out into the hallway. Will repeated this act three more times. A medic had finally reached the area as Hancock pulled the last injured crew member from engineering. Will leaned against the wall and took a few deep breaths. Then the comm channel beeped.

[Nice work Doctor. However we have a critical situation,] Ryan said over the comm channel.

"What is it?"

[We're in the midst of a core breach. You need to disengage the magnetic interlocks and the coolant overflow. You have to go to the upper level in engineering and enter your access code. Then move down to the main level by the chief engineer's console. You have 12 minutes.]

"Thanks sir. I like the feeling of working under pressure." Will stood up and ran back into Engineering. He had to crawl over the fallen bulkheads and dodge a coolant vent that was venting. He ran to the ladder that led to the upper level. He started to feel the pain in his shoulder, but ignored it as he forced himself up the ladder. He found the computer screen blinking and quickly entered his access code which disengaged the coolant overflow procedure. As Will began to make his way down, the Ronin took another hit causing Will to fall and land on a piece of fallen bulkhead.

Shaking it off after a few minutes, Will tried to get to his feet but fell over and realized he had a piece of bulkhead in his side. It however, didn't hit him that he had been injured and ignored and got to his feet and staggered over to chief engineer's station and pressed the magnetic interlocks disengagement sequence.

Sweating and feeling light-headed, Will slumped to the floor and began to feel pain in his shoulder and side. He pulled his right hand up from his side and saw dark red blood. Knowing he was hurt now, Will felt somewhat scared, the thought that he was possibly fatally injured made him more scared then ever before.
