[Private Jax to Lieutenant McQueen, They're moving, I repeat, the Jem'Hadar are moving.] The voice of Private Garet Jax announced over the comm. "Understood." Logan replied. It was just beginning to get light and most of the Marines were already up and ready to fight. Jenkins and Patterson who had been on watch returned to the group and immediately checked their weapons. "Hendricks, head for the clearing we saw on the map." Logan ordered. "It's the shortest route to the colony. Booth, Jenkins, Patterson you'll be with me, Lieutenant J'ross and Lieutenant Kahfre. We'll try and move around them, come at them from behind." Hendricks and the rest of the Marines headed back into the forest, whilst the Starfleet officers and the three Marines started to prepare for a fight. Five minutes later, they too had left the camp and headed off into the forest, following the treeline to try and get behind the Jem'Hadar. As they pushed through the tree, Logan kept checking the tricorder he was carrying. Jamming the signals had both advantages and disadvantages. The Jem'Hadar wouldn't be able to track them, but neither would they be able to track the Jem'Hadar. But they knew that there were only a couple of areas below the treeline where the Jem'Hadar could climb up. One was close to the camp and had been booby-trapped, the second was about a mile further up the beach and that was where the small group were heading. They arrived at the bank, but were too late. The disturbed sand showed that the Jem'Hadar had already been through and had headed into the forest. It was up to Hendricks and the Marines now. "Let's get set-up for their return." Logan ordered. They headed into the trees once more and found good firing positions. They didn't have to wait long before they heard the sound of phaser fire. The firing continued for about ten minutes, then stopped. Ten minutes passed and then they heard the sound of phasers once more, this time much closer. They saw a small group of Jem'Hadar heading towards them, most of them walking backwards firing indiscriminately into the trees. Occasionally one would fall as they were hit by a phaser blast. Logan nodded to the others to prepare to fire and then aimed his own rifle at the path ahead of them. Booth was the first to fire at the retreating Jem'Hadar, hitting one of the lead soldiers. The rest reacted and turned towards the direction of the new attack. Patterson and Jenkins were the next to fire, coming out from behind their trees and taking down a second Jem'Hadar, that left eight who were now charging towards the attackers. Booth took down a third before they reached his position and killed him, Patterson and Jenkins had moved forward to provide cover, taking down two more. Logan, M'eko and Rahel had also moved up, taking over the positions Patterson and Jenkins had previously covered, taking random shots at the ever advancing Jem'Hadar. Suddenly Rahel tripped over a tree root and hit the ground. Logan turned upon hearing the sound of pain and a phaser blast hit him in the back, his armour protecting him from the majority of the blast, but the force dropping him to the ground. By then Rahel had regained her balance and was back on her feet, charging at the Jem'Hadar who had just fired the shot at Logan, rage in her eyes. The two Jem'Hadar behind him dropped to the floor as Jenkins and M'eko
fired, whilst the third Jem'Hadar, shocked at the charging Starfleet officer
started to fire his weapon. The last two Jem'Hadar had escaped, running into the cover of the trees. Rahel, turned to see Logan get up off the floor and brush the dirt off his body. Rahel ran towards him, just to make sure he was alright. "I'm fine." Logan remarked, a little embarrassed by Rahel's over protective manner. Hendricks and the Marines arrived moments later. "How many were they ?" Hendricks enquired. "We've lost two of them." Logan replied. "But looks like we've got the rest, how many did you manage to take out ?" "We got about a dozen, the rest fled." Hendricks stated. "We took out about three more in our pursuits, which with the eight here makes twenty three." "Any casualties ?" Logan enquired. "One fatality, Private Waynewright and one injury, Private Tyler, but it was only a flesh wound." Hendricks reported. "I've left Tyler and Private Jax back at the clearing just incase any of the Jem'Hadar doubled back." "The scans I took of the shuttle crash site showed at least double the number of Jem'Hadar that attacked us." M'eko announced. "Which means there could be a second wave." "We should hit them now, whilst they're re-grouping." Hendricks remarked. "I agree." Logan said. "Let's end this once and for all." |
