The moon was dark -- it appeared to be night time. It was however, unusually warm. Myron enjoyed the heat, typical for a person of his race. Myron's away team partner Captain Lataro, the ship's Intelligence Officer, seemed to tolerate the heat, or didn't complain.
The two had beamed about 320 yards from the communication array. In the distance they could see the outlines of what appeared to be a perimeter of sorts. Okul pulled his tricorder out and began to scan, as did the Captain. The two officers walked in silence towards their targeted area.
Myron turned his wrist beacon on to see better. Once about fifteen meters from the area that looked like a perimeter, he saw that it was. There were a few large pieces of metal, and cargo boxes with the Federation seal. The two walked into the perimeter and looked around to see empty phaser rifle power packs strewn on the ground.
Captain Lataro moved ahead, unphased by the debris that was covering the ground. He walked into the cave and came to the communication relay that was about thirteen meters tall. It was not activated and showed no signs of life.
"Hey Ensign, I need your help over here." Captain Lataro said to Okul, still looking at the left-over debris.
"Yes sir, sorry," He replied, jogging into the cave.
The Captain had the mainetance hatch off the communication relay and seemed to be playing with a few of the circuits. "Sir, what will this thing do for the colonist?" Okul asked.
"Hopefully give them a power source. However, I can tell now this only serves as a communication beacon. It only has enough power cells to relay messages, not receive them. Commodore Wallace's engineering skills are his only major downfall." Lataro then hooked his tricorder into the beacon's receiver, then pressed a few buttons and shook his head.
"Last communication log was 4 months ago. Nothing good here." Lataro pulled his tricorder out and closed it.
"Sir, could we use this for the colonists to communicate with Starbase 901?" Okul was full of questions.
"No, it would take a team of engineers, and every seven months they'd have to recharge the power cells. Sorry Ensign, maybe next time." Lataro tapped his comm badge. "Hornet, two to beam up."
Myron's first away mission was over. He didn't know how to feel. For him, it was interesting walking a battle field. Yet on the other hand it was a failure. Nothing important or significant came of it.
