The three Starfleet officers were getting a sense of the area around the pit that contained the heavy dilithium deposits.
Ensign Harris made the first discovery of the buildings some 300 yards away from the mining pit. The naked eye couldn't see the buildings for the growth that had overtaken the structure's shape and design. The tricorder however, showed the shape of the building, and Ensign MacLeod said, "It appears to be Cardassian in design."
Harris turned and gave MacLeod a look of, 'Yeah you think?'
Tunis kept calm and said, "Over here is the entrance. There is no door. It appears to have been blown off."
MacLeod took his phaser rifle from his shoulder, and turned its light source on and scanned the area inside with his tricorder. "No life signs."
Harris walked in and shined his flashlight on the ground. It showed a dead and decomposed Cardassian.
Tunis found a computer console. He pressed a few buttons and the lights came on in the complex. He tried to access the computer their but he was denied. Harris was hit with an idea. "Hey MacLeod! You're an Alpha Quadrant Jem'Hadar. Tap into the computer."
The fact that MacLeaod was an Alpha meant that his genetic programming included the ability to interface with all Cardassian computers. He went to the computer station and started to break into the complex's computer files. He then transferred them to the runabout's main computer.
"Ensign Tunis, I have downloaded the files to the runabout for study. I suggest that we return and study the files before continuing the planet survey," MacLeod said.
Tunis agreed, and the three officers returned to the runabout and spent nine hours studying the files. Harris and Tunis where horrified to see the history of this place. Tunis at once contacted Commodore Pike on the Knight.
[What have you found on the planet that would make you contact me ahead of schedule, Mr. Tunis?]
"Sir, twenty-six years ago this place was the labor camp of Barohos. We have found the remains of six hundred Bajorans and some dead Cardassians. This place was involved in a riot in the year 2357 and abandoned later that year. All Cardie knowledge was erased by order of Gul Dukat in 2369."
Pike was not happy at the news of this. [Okay. Well done. Return to the Knight and prepare a report for the Federation Counsel and the Bajoran government.]
"Aye sir, we will be back in twenty-three minutes. Tunis out."
Tunis hated the fact that he had found this camp and felt a deep sense of guilt for those people that died there. Now he knew why so many old officers had such hatred for the Cardassians and why the Bajorans despised them.
