A strong shudder woke Tumock from his sleep, he quickly sat up. The red alert klaxon sounded followed by a message from Commodore Pike. "All hands to battle stations. Prepare for intruders, senior officers report to the Conference Lounge". With that, Tumock quickly got changed and headed for the Bridge.
As the turbolift door slid open Tumock was greeted by the bridge crew still trying to overcome the tractor beam. Tumock decided he would see what he could do and headed for the Ops station. Upon arriving he was told by Ensign Harris of the attempts they had made: reversing shield polarity, switching to a modulating shield frequency, and both together. Tumock came round next to Ensign Harris and analyzed the readings from the attempts. When Tumock looked over them he realized that when both procedures were used, the ship was able to move around the planet's orbit. Tumock scanned the planet for all energy signatures. At that point he realized that the northern pole of the planet was creating a huge magnetic field.
"Commodore," called Tumock.
The Commodore turned around and looked at Tumock, slightly confused that Tumock was at the Ops post.
Tumock continued, "If we change our shield polarity and switch to a modulating shield frequency we are able to move within the orbit of the planet."
"And?" replied Pike.
"We will be able to move the ship to the northern pole of this planet, the interference should disrupt the tractor beam."
"Do it," replied Pike. "Helm, set a course for the planet's northern pole."
"Aye sir," came the response. As the ship positioned itself, the tractor beam became weaker but still held.
"It's not enough," called Ensign Churok. "The tractor beam is still locked on us."
"Is there any way we can increase the magnetic interference?" asked Pike.
"If we set the deflector dish to send out a continuing magnetic pulse it might be enough," came a quick response from Tumock.
"Engineering," said Pike into the intercom.
[ Engineering here. ]
"Set up a modulating magnetic pulse."
[ Aye sir. ]
"The pulse has been activated, and the tractor beam has been disengaged," Tumock said as he lifted his head from the panel.
"Well done Lieutenant," Pike said as he got up and headed for the Conference lounge door.
"Ops is yours again Ensign," said Tumock as he followed Pike into the Conference Lounge. Soon the senior staff had collected in the Conference Lounge. After everyone had settled, the Commodore decided to start. "For those not knowing what is going on I will be brief. A race called the Kelvans is heading for Earth on what seems to be a planet. The Kelvans have hostile intentions and intend to board our ship. Starfleet has already been informed of the situation and has dispatched a fleet to intercept the Kelvans. Until then, it is our job to stop, weaken or slow down the Kelvans as much as possible. Suggestions?"
"I recommend that we first sabotage their propulsion systems, this will then give us more time to stop the Kelvans and give Starfleet more time to prepare for them," suggested Tumock.
"Good idea Mr. Tumock. The only problem is that we don't know where the engines are," replied Pike.
"I believe I do," said Ensign Tunis. "I've downloaded the sensor readings." Tunis passes a PADD to Commodore Pike. "As you can see, this area shows a very high energy output to the rest of the planet." Tunis pointed to the PADD.
"I see. What about their defensive capabilities?" asked Pike.
"The moons seem to be their primary weapons," replied Tunis.
"Which may be a problem," interrupted Tumock. "One of the moons will come into this area in approximately six hours and twenty-three minutes. Although the interference will stop weapon locks, we will still be in danger."
"I see. Ensign Tunis, see what you can find out about those moons and how to stop them."
"Aye sir."
"Tumock, we will carry out your suggestion. Have your team ready to depart in thirty minutes," said Pike as he got ready to get up.
"The interference will make transporters useless, we will have to use a shuttle," Tunis said before Pike managed to get up.
"Okay then." Pike turned to Carter. "Will you be able to take the team down?"
"Anytime," replied Carter.
"Well, if that's it, you're all dismissed." Pike stood up and exited. Everyone got up and followed. As Tumock approached the door he was intercepted by Lieutenant Carter. "Well done Tumock, not even a day on the ship and you're leading an away team."
Tumock looked at her puzzled and replied, "But you will be the senior officer on the mission."
"But it was your idea Tumock, I'll see you in the shuttle bay in thirty minutes." With that, she exited.
After twenty-five minutes, Tumock had assembled an away team, making sure he had someone from every field that he would need. Ensign Tyran Nige and Ensign MacLeod for basic protection, Ensign Linn Haakon as the medic, and Ensign Tunis as the science field, and of course Lieutenant Carter as the shuttle pilot. As they assembled in the shuttle bay, Tumock handed out PADD's with their orders. Lieutenant Carter stepped out from the crowd and over to Tumock. "The shuttles are going to be too small to hold us all, we'll have to take a runabout."
"Agreed," replied Tumock.
Soon they were ready, and had cleared the Knight.
"I suggest we alter our shield frequency and go under the ocean to remain undetected," Tumock suggested as he scanned the area. Lieutenant Carter took the runabout under the surface of the ocean. As they headed for their destination, native sea life swam past.
"They're beautiful," said Tunis in wonder.
"Keep your mind on the mission," ordered Tumock.
At that moment Carter spoke up. "This is as far as we can go without being detected, I can beam you to the source but you'll only have 3 minutes until you are detected."
"Then that will have to do," replied Tumock as the team made their way to the back of the ship.
"Energizing!" called Carter.
The team found themselves in a huge cavern. Massive cylinders with a green misty energy ran from top to bottom, consoles covered the walls. They stood in awe for a few seconds then Tumock remembered what they were doing here.
"Ensign Nige and Ensign MacLeod, stand guard and cover us, Ensign Tunis, get as much information about this technology as possible and find away of stopping it," shouted Tumock. With that Tumock rushed over to where the energy conduits met at a big computer console. Tumock took out a tricorder and started scanning the computer console as he started trying to shut down the engines.
Then the alarm sounded, everyone tensed and got ready for combat. At that moment three Kelvans rushed through a nearby door, Ensign Nige and MacLeod started shooting and the Kelvans fell. "You'd better hurry up!" shouted Nige.
"I believe I've managed to stop the energy transfer," replied Tumock. With that, all the misty energy started to drain out. "I'm ejecting the energy supply." A violent shudder hit the room.
"What now?" asked Nige.
"Shoot anything that looks important," replied Tumock. The team started shooting consoles and all the cylinders. More Kelvans rushed in and the security team diverted their attention to them. Explosions started taking over the room. "It's time to go now!" shouted Tumock.
One of the Kelvans shot an energy weapon at MacLeod. It hit his stomach and Ensign Haakon ran over to him, and Tumock and Tunis followed. As Tumock got to the group, the Kelvan fired again at Haakon. Tumock ran and pushed her out of the way. The shot hit him and he fell to his knees. "Tumock... to... runabout... Beam ussss...," Tumock uttered and then fell unconscious.
Tumock barely opened his eyes to see the ceiling of the runabout and Ensign Haakon looking down on him. "Are you feeling ok?" asked Haakon, but Tumock could not respond. He was too tired and fell unconscious once again.
Tumock opened his eyes again, this time he was able to see better and move. "Hello there. Glad to see you're back with us." Tumock sat up and looked around. Lieutenant Kira was standing near him and Ensign MacLeod was lying on a biobed. "Is he...?" asked Tumock.
"Oh... no, he's fine." replied the doctor. At that moment the Commodore walked in.
"Ahhh, I see you're awake now. The doctor told me that the Kelvan weapon punctured a lung and broke two ribs," said the Commodore as he approached the biobed.
"What happened after I was shot?" asked Tumock.
"After you were shot Lieutenant Carter beamed you out and took you straight back to the Knight, but in the future, no more suicide attempts!"
"I was trying to protect my team. One was injured and I didn't want to lose any others while they were under my command," replied Tumock.
"Well, when you're ready, report to the bridge. That moon will be here soon and I would have everyone ready." With that the Commodore exited. Tumock attempted to sit up, but was forced to lay down by the doctor.
"You're not going in this condition," he ordered.
Tumock argued with the doctor, but was confined to sickbay.
