[Brock to Lieutenant Tyran.]
"Tyran here, what can I do for you Lieutenant?"
[I've noticed over a few days now that repairs I make seem to get damaged again whenever I go off duty. At first I thought it was just me making inadequate repairs but then some other engineers reported it to me as well. I didn't want to report it to the Commodore, he seems to have enough to worry about without this.]
"Do you think it could be a saboteur?"
[I am afraid that's the way it looks. It seems as though someone on board doesn't want us to go anywhere.]
"Thanks for telling me Lieutenant, I'd better inform the Commodore." With that Tyran turned to the turbolift. "Bridge," he ordered as he stepped in.
"Good morning Lieutenant," said Lieutenant Carter who was also in the turbolift. "Sleep well?"
"No, not really I...." The turbolift doors slid open.
"Well this is my stop, good-bye Lieutenant." The turbolift doors once more slid closed and resumed course for the bridge. The doors slid open to reveal the bridge bustling with activity. Repair crews were at work in almost every corner and the senior officers didn't stand still for a moment. Tyran walked down to the lower level and rang the bell for the Commodore's ready room.
"Come in," came a muffled reply from inside. Tyran stepped inside to find Yeoman Piper delivering reports to the Commodore. "That will be all Piper," said the Commodore. She left the room. "Now Ensign what can I do for you?"
"Sir, I've received a report from Lieutenant Brock. To put it simply sir, he believes we have a saboteur onboard. He and other engineering staff have reported that their repairs are being tampered with. It would seem as if somebody didn't want us to go any where."
The Commodore considered a moment. "The last thing we need right now is a saboteur. Go down to engineering and keep an eye on things. If there is a saboteur, find him."
"Yes sir." With that Tyran turned to the door.
"Lieutenant," called Pike. "Don't let anyone know of this. We don't want to let the saboteur find out that we're looking for him."
At the turbolift, Tyran met up with Tumock.
"Engineering," Tumock said. "So Lieutenant, I haven't seen a great deal of you since we arrived here. I hear you and the Jem'Hadar fought off a boarding party of Kelvans. That's impressive work Lieutenant."
"Tell me Lieutenant. Have you noticed any systems you repair breaking down again or anything of the sort."
"Once, when I was realigning internal sensors. The next day they were inoperative again. Why?"
"No reason. What are you heading to engineering for?"
"Brock asked me to help him with the impulse drive." The doors slid open and the two officers walked out towards Brock.
"Ah, Lieutenant Tumock. You're here," he said. "I've begun realigning the.... Yes, Lieutenant Tyran? What can I do for you?"
"Ah.... I've been told to make regular reports to the Commodore on the status of repairs."
"Ok. Well, just stay out of the way." With that Tumock and Brock went to the upper level. Tyran turned and started talking to engineers. All engineers had similar reports that they had fixed something one day and then the next day it was inoperative again. Tyran decided to set up imaging devices in Jeffries tubes and around key systems so that whenever engineering was empty, he could keep an eye on what was happening. With that he decided to return to his quarters after a long day of questioning people. As he walked towards the turbolift, the doors slid open and Tumock stepped out.
"Good evening Lieutenant. You haven't seen Brock anywhere have you?"
"He went off duty about an hour ago."
"Are you the last one here?"
"Yes."
"I guess I'll just have to leave this report here until the morning."
"Good night Lieutenant."
The next morning Tyran looked at the footage that he had taken from the night before. He saw himself walking out and Tumock going over to one of the engineering stations and placing a PADD there. He walked back out to the turbolift. Five minutes later the image went blank. However, the sound still remained and Tyran heard the voice of the computer.
<Access to that system is restricted to security level beta-two. Security clearance accepted.>
After that nothing else was heard. Tyran brought this evidence to Commodore Pike.
"Lieutenant, go to engineering and find out whose security code was used to access that system."
"I already have sir. They wiped the memory clean. They used a beta-two level security clearance code. That means it has to be somebody above the rank of ensign, which should narrow our search."
"Do what you can Lieutenant."
That night Tyran stayed in engineering hiding under a console. For a long time nothing happened, but eventually Tyran did hear the turbolift doors open and footsteps approaching nearby. He heard the same computer warning as before.
<Access to that system is restricted to security level beta-two. Security clearance accepted.>
With that he took his phaser and stepped out to find Tumock at the console.
"May I ask what you were doing Lieutenant?"
"I was just checking the status of the transwarp drive."
"Or were you trying to sabotage it?"
"No. I'm a Vulcan. I wouldn't lie!"
"Your also half Human, and from what I've seen of you, you seem to act a lot more like a Human than a Vulcan." Tyran tapped his comm badge, "Commodore, sorry to disturb you this late but I've caught our saboteur."
"Take him to the brig Lieutenant. I'll be down in the morning."
The next morning, Pike went to the brig to question Tumock while Tyran went back to engineering. As soon as he entered, Brock came straight over and reported another sabotage attempt. Tyran instantly contacted Pike.
"Commodore. Tumock is not the saboteur. But I think I know who is and if I'm right I think I know where they'll be too. MacLeod and Beckett are going down to the planet today in a shuttle to collect the final components for the transwarp drive and if I'm right, they'll try and stop that shuttle".
"Get down there Lieutenant. I'll meet you there."
Tyran hurried off to the shuttle bay.
The large doors opened and Tyran stepped into the cavernous shuttle bay. He walked over to the Mekong where he found Carter modifying the engines.
"Good morning Lieutenant." said Tyran as he walked towards her. "Making sure the shuttle's in working order before it goes out are you?"
"Uh.... yes," replied Carter.
"Do you mind if I take a look?"
"Go right ahead."
Tyran looked into the open compartment. He saw an odd device placed on one of the plasma conduits.
"What on earth is this?" He turned round to see Carter swinging a large metal rod at him.
When Tyran came around he saw Pike and Carter talking. He turned around to see Haakon packing away her things into her medical kit.
"You're going to be fine" she said. "You've got a nasty concussion though, so try not to move to violently, okay?"
"Okay. Thanks." Tyran got up and walked over to Pike. MacLeod had just entered and was taking Carter away. Pike walked over to Tyran holding a small cube. "What going to happen to Carter?" asked Tyran.
"This is Carter" said Pike holding up the small cube. "The person you thought was Carter was actually a Kelvan. The Kelvan took her place when Tumock's team sabotaged one of the Kelvan moons. One of the Kelvans beamed onto the shuttle, turned her into this and took her place. She had been secretly informing the Kelvans of everything we were planning to do which is why they reacted so quickly when we tried to escape. Well, I'm going to get Carter turned back into a Human. Meanwhile, I suggest you apologize to Tumock."
Later that day Tyran walked into the mess hall to find Tumock sitting at a table with Ensign Harris. Tyran walked over to them.
"Could I speak to Tumock alone please Ensign?"
"Sure," replied Harris as he got up and joined Haakon and Kira at another table. Tyran sat down.
"Tumock. I'm sorry about jumping to conclusions before about you being a traitor. I was under a lot of pressure to find the saboteur."
"Don't worry about it. I'd have probably done the same thing. At least you caught the saboteur."
"I suppose so. Hopefully next time we encounter the Kelvans we may have some better luck."
