"To Weep, Or Not To Weep"

Author: Lieutenant Tumock

Location: Tumock's Quarters, Ten Forward

Tumock slumped into a chair. He sat there in a dark room with a PADD in his hand and his eyes closed. His father always told him his worst enemy would be his emotions, but Tumock had accepted his human heritage and didn't want to completely lose it. He opened his eyes again and looked at the PADD. It clearly showed that Vulcan had been destroyed. A burning anger started to rise in Tumock and he threw the PADD at his couch as he pulled himself to his feet. He wanted to do exactly as Nige had done and go wild, but stopped himself and sat down again. Anger was a human emotion, from his human side from the race that did very little to save Vulcan. He decided there and then that his father was right, emotions would be his worst enemy. In a few hours he would be engaged in a battle with the Kelvans, but that didn't seem to matter now. Tumock then got down onto the floor and started to meditate.

Later after Tumock had finished, he headed to Ten Forward. When he arrived he noticed Nige out of uniform sitting on his own. He looked up at Tumock, then looked down again. Tumock walked over and sat next to him.

"I heard the news, Tumock. Join the party," said Nige.

"Lieutenant, I do not believe this is a good time to party," replied Tumock.

"Tumock! That was quite Vulcany."

"Do you forget that I am half Vulcan?"

"I know, but to be honest... it never really showed."

"I have looked over the present situation and decided that Humans are selfish, illogical beings obsessed that everyone should be more like them."

"Why the change of heart?"

"When Starfleet was notified of the Kelvan battle planet, they immediately thought about protecting Earth. There should have been fleets posted at different areas that would engage the planet closer to Federation borders, and saved the lives of billions of Federation civilians."

"But the Federation has many species living in it, and it's not only Humans at high ranking positions."

"Their tactics were flawed, they keep information secret from officers...."

"That's why I'm leaving. When I first heard of Starfleet, I thought it was too good to be true. Once I've seen it in action, it lost its charm."

"Starfleet needs a lot of improvement, but it won't be improved if people who have the potential to make a difference leave." At that, Nige looked at him. "I hope to one day rise to a position where I can make a difference to Starfleet. Improve it so younger generations will not have to suffer as people are suffering now."

"On my way sir," said Tumock tapping his Comm badge. "Just think about it before you throw everything away." With that, Tumock got up and walked out.
