Lt. Lataro stepped aboard the USS Virgo for the first time and immediately glanced around. He was awe struck at the beauty and size of such a vessel. Until this time, he had spent some time about different outposts and space stations but never had he been on an actual starship since the fateful period of his youth. The aura of the ship made Lataro stop for a moment as subtle but unpleasant memories of the time he was aboard the Vixen with his parents appeared in his mind. All he could remember was frames and wires dangling from the bulkheads and fires raging from the walls. Red alert warnings flashing all over echoed through his mind.
"Sir, is there a problem?" a young crewman asked slightly shaking Lataro's arm.
Jonathan didn't realize that he had actually stopped and paused in the middle of the corridor as other personnel were trying to get by him.
"I am sorry, Crewman. Yes, I am fine, thank you," Lataro said as he tried to shake the memories from his head. The crewman carried on as did Lataro. Immediately, his senses returning, Lataro developed a plan of action. His possessions were in a small sachel he carried around his shoulder so he decided that the first place he should go was to the Bridge and report in to the Captain. He had studied as much as he could about Captain Maruu. Lataro knew that he was Bajoran, and the USS Virgo was his first assignment. So he figured that he and the captain have some things in common. Everything else were things that would have to be learned as they went along.
"Computer. Show me an overall skematic of the Virgo." Lataro said.
<Security authorization not recognized. Unable to comply.>
"Damn. This sucks," Lataro whispered under his breath. "Then how am I to find my way to the bridge?"
"Computer, locate Captain Maruu."
<Captain Maruu is on the Bridge.>
"Good. So how do I get to the Bridge? Computer, where is the nearest turbolift?"
<The nearest turbolift is Section 2A. Please follow the pulsating lights for the quickest way to turbolift.>
The side panels began pulsating and Lataro followed them to the turbolift. He entered and faced the door. "Bridge."
The doors shut and he was wisped away. About two minutes later, the doors opened unto the Bridge. Lataro stepped forward and again was awestruck at the complexity. He pulled out his PADD and approached Captain Maruu, who was examining the science officer position. "Captain Maruu, Lt. Jonathan Lataro reporting for duty."
Captain Maruu straightened up and faced Lataro. "Welcome aboard, Lieutenant," he said as he took the PADD from Lataro. "So you are my Chief of Security?"
"Yes, Sir."
"Very well." He pointed to Commander Surok and introduced him and Ensign K'Lara. "Lieutenant, this is Commander Surok my First Officer, whom you've already at the entrance to the ship, and our helmsman Ensign K'Lara. From your file you lived on Cronus for a while?"
"Yes, Sir."
"Then you and K'Lara would have a lot to talk about. I stress camaraderie amongst my Bridge officers. So you, knowing something of Klingon culture, might facilitate you two getting to know one another."
"Well, Sir, I would just like to take things one step at a time, but at whatever opportunity arises sobeit. Sir, I have a question. I tried to access the ship's skematics and layouts so that I could become familiar with the ship. It has denied me access."
"Protocol, Lieutenant. No problem. Computer, give Lieutenant Junior Grade Jonathan Lataro Command Control functions effective immediately: authorization Maruu98143-Omega1."
<Processing...Confirmed. Command Control has been authorized.>
"Thank you sir. Now what about where I might be able to place my things?"
Lataro went to his assigned quarters and put his things away, then immediately returned to the Bridge. He took his post and quickly began learning the different aspects of his station, ship, and its crew. This is going to be a lot of work, he thought, but I am going to enjoy this.
