Whilst on the outside Beka appears to be a normal female, she is very much a tom-boy. Growing up the youngest of five kids and the only girl, she learnt early on in life how to fight (and win).

Background

Rebecka, or "Beka" as she prefers to be called was born on the USS Maru, a science vessel mainly crewed by Vulcans. Beka and her family were one of only five families on the ship and she was one of thirty children, four of them her older brothers and the only girl.

At the age of ten, she returned to Earth just like all her brothers had to continue her schooling whilst living with her grandparents. Beka hated Earth, she wanted to be out in space watching planets and stars pass by her bedroom window, not sat in an air-conditioned classroom looking at trees and blue sky.

All of her brothers followed their parents into Starfleet and joined the academy. Beka was however reluctant to attend the academy and had to re-take her second year. Now twenty-one, she decided that Starfleet was not for her and left, something her parents were furious about.

She managed to get a position on a Federation cargo vessel as a navigator and shuttle pilot, which she kept for three years. Then she suddenly found herself fighting for her life when the vessel was attacked by Orion pirates. She just managed to reach an escape pod and was lucky enough that the pirates did not tractor her back.

She 'crashed' on a planet close to the Cardassian border and soon found that life on a borderworld was tough. She got a position as pilot on a small cargo vessel the SS Tri-Star, which she kept for six years until in 2381 she was offered the position of first officer on a converted Klingon Raptor named Firefly.

The crew of the Firefly and that of the Tri-Star had always been rivals, competing for jobs, although neither Captain Billard (The Firefly Captain) and Captain Adams (Captain of the Tri-Star) had a grudge against the other. During the many encounters between the two crews, Beka got to know one of the crew, Jack Stryker well and the two became firm friends.

It was in 2381 that Jack Stryker arrived on the planet of Bespin with the body of Captain Billard. During the funeral, Jack noticed Beka and sought her out, making her a job offer to become the Firefly's first officer. The entire crew of the Firefly had been betrayed by the first officer and Jack and Captain Billard were the only two to escape. Captain Billard died of his injuries and Jack knowing that he couldn't operate the ship alone, realsied that Beka would make an excellent first officer.

Beka took up the offer of becoming first officer and the two headed off into space once more, this time together. In 2382 they took onboard a new helm and navigation officer, Dylan Anasazi over time Beka and Dylan developed a close relationship.
