Serenity is a frontier planet where anything goes, in an entire solar system full of possibilities! There's plenty of room for all sorts of characters—from honest settlers, homesteaders, shop keepers, ranchers, farmers, to rough-and-tumble miners and prospectors, to all manner of disreputable traders, hucksters and outright thieves. Not to mention the brave representatives of Starfleet stationed on one of the planetside bases.

In other words, use your imagination when creating a character!

Civilian characters can be absolutely anything you can imagine—settlers, farmers, bankers, miners, pirates, highwaymen, store owners, sherriffs, barkeepers, bums, hermits, inventors, cowboys, indians, pilots, moms, dads, kids, wealthy landowners, cattle barons, private investigators, explorers, mercenaries... You get the idea.

There is no Engineering Department on Serenity. Mechanical/repair duties are handled by the Operations division.

Again, your imagination is the limit here. Starfleet Officers can be Security Officers, shuttle pilots, transporter technicians, air traffic controllers, landscapers, biologists, geologists, surgeons, dentists, janitors, bodyguards, Marines, cargo handlers, maintenance workers, transporter operators, secretaries, file clerks, computer programmers... You get the idea.
