Commander Rashad was sat in the Captain's ready room going over the daily reports. Officially she was still first officer of the USS Leviathan-A, even though that vessel was deemed lost beyond repair. Unofficially, she was working under Captain Taybar in the commissioning of the ship she now sat on, the USS Leviathan-B. The Leviathan-B had just returned from a test flight of the impulse engines and was docked above Utopia Planitia. In a few hours, after the data from the flight had been analysed and any adjustments made, the ship would be returning back to Earth and Starbase One. The door chimed from outside in the corridor and Rashad switched off the console and announced. "Enter." The doors opened and a young junior Lieutenant in a science uniform brushed a hair from her face. It looked as if the young woman was scared to come in and face the Commander. After a moment, the officer stepped into the room and stood to attention in front of the Commander, handing over a Padd she had been carrying. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Amy Lloyd reporting for duty Captain." Amy announced. "Please take a seat Lieutenant." Rashad replied. She tried to remember who this young woman was without having to look at the Padd and then it came to her. "You're our new Stellar Cartographer. Welcome onboard." "Thank you Captain." Amy replied. Being called Captain made Rashad feel uneasy. Officially no-one was Captain of the Leviathan-B and until a week ago she had always assumed that Captain Taybar would be sitting where Rashad now sat. It wasn't in Rashad's nature to be sitting around and she longed to return to work. But she was the highest ranking command officer on the ship and so the title of "Captain" was hers. Rashad now activated the Padd and started to read through it. "I see you've been teaching at the Academy for the past couple of years." Rashad commented. "Why did you want to move back into a vessel position ?" "Before I started teaching at the academy, I was the Assistant Stellar cartographer on the USS Fujiyama." Amy replied. "But space has always been what fascinates me and I got the urge to get back out there." "Where you onboard when it was destroyed during the Barien war ?" Rashad enquired. "Yes." Amy replied. "I only just managed to reach an escape pod and launch before the Bariens destroyed the ship." "Then you were very lucky." Rashad commented. "Barely a third of the Fujiyama survived." "I know." Amy said, with a tinge of sadness. "I lost many friends that day." "I see you speak Romulan !." Rashad remarked. "Not something many Starfleet officers study." "I spent a couple of years working on the USS Albion running surveys of the Neutral zone." Amy replied. "We got to hear a lot of Romulan transmissions and I decided to learn to read and speak Romulan." "Romulan is such an interesting language to read isn't it ?" Rashad suggested. "I like it." Amy replied. "If that is all Captain, I'd like to get to my assigned quarters and settle in. Then I'd like to examine the Stellar Cartography lab, I've read so much about it." "Dismissed." Rashad announced. "Thank you Captain." Amy said, heading back out the door she had stepped through earlier and down the corridor to her new home. |
