Hellcat Mine

Chief Shale was on the Bridge going over some things with Cadet McCaffee. The Chief wanted to keep a close watch on the young helmsman.

"Chief get in my ready room ASAP. " Devore said standing at the door way to the ready room.

"Aye Aye sir."

Shale walked in and saw Commander Soleil along with Major Phanan the three most highest senior officers on the Leviathan-A.

"Yes sir, you wanted me ?"

Devore tried to give a comforting look at Shale, but the strain of everything shined through.

"Chief Petty Officer Richard Shale. For outstanding conduct and bravery during the Barien War. I hereby make you, Chief of the Boat. Even though your a Junior Chief officer, tradition is tradition. For your bravery, you're hereby award the Distinguished Flying Cross sixth award. I believe congratulations are in order Chief." Devore said as he was handed the DFC in a leather box which he opened to show the award . Major Phanan handed Devore the award.

"Thank you sir. However I can't take credit for the success. After all Ensign Gorden was with me as well."

"I know Chief. Also your given a new responsibility as well as Cadet McCaffee." Devore finished.

"What more could I do sir ?" Shale asked puzzled.

"How do you like the Hellcat ?."

"Fine sir."

"Good it's your job to keep her running and yours to fly. You should finish repairs on her in week. I want a report of your progress."

Shale looked at his medal and up at the Captain and XO and the major and thought for a minute.

*I can't make a name as a Captain but I can make my name as pilot and engineer. All right dad I'm doing it for you.*

"Sir's, I accept. Captain do you mind if the boy assists me in the maintenance of the Hellcat."

"Good thinking he could get his hands dirty for once."
