Life is Good

"Okay Lieutenant, time to leave the Bridge your watch and my Bridge time are over." Captain Devore said walking out of his ready room.

"Aye sir." Shale stood up and stretched after four strait hours at the helm.

"It's good to see you as Lieutenant and call you Lieutenant."

"Thank you sir." Rick said walking into the turbo lift. Rick had a grin ear to ear and Devore couldn't wonder what made him so happy.

"For Pete Sake man, what has you so happy ?" Devore asked.

"Sir I have a promotion, and a girl that is great. So great in fact here take a look." Rick pulled out a small box, and opened it.

"Lieutenant that is an engagement ring." Devore said in amazement.

"Yes sir, Lieutenant Gordon and I. I am going to get down on one knee, and do it the way my father told me."

"Well Lieutenant allow me to say good luck, and I know you too will be happy together," Devore said extending his hand.

"Thanks."

The turbolift came to a halt, and the two stepped off. Both headed down to the mess hall. Captain Devore met Mrs. Devore.

Mess Hall

Rick saw Janet sitting at a table, by herself, and he knew now was the time to strike. Walking past him was Lieutenant Grafton.

"Easy sir take it slow, and then let loose." Grafton said tapping his friend on the shoulder. Janet saw Rick and smiled, and she then motioned for him to come over. Shale gave a smile, and then walked towards her.

As he reached less then half a foot he dropped to one knee. Janet was a little unaccustomed to this.

"Janet Gordon will you marry me?" Rick said opening the box.

At that moment the busy mess hall was quit, and all eyes and ears were turned towards the two.

"Yes." Janet replied with tears of joy running down her cheeks.

"Come on lets go and have some privacy." Rick said, grabbing her hand and walking out the door, to the sound of a cheering crowd.

Crew Quarters

In the crew quarters, Janet sat down, on the couch and tried, to grasp the situation. Truth was she didn't know how to feel.

"Listen Janet I want you to know this. When I met you I was nothing more then a guy with no plans. I was living day to day. Now since this assignment brought us together, I can wake up in the morning and feel I have done something worth while."

Rick said sitting down and holding her hand, and then he sat back."Look you've been given a choice assignment, as I have. Hell when we get back we'll be legends. Life is good."
