The Stellar Cartography department on the Leviathan was best described as small but powerful. Like a very small broom cupboard it sat at the far end of the science department and completely lacked any atmosphere of intense concentration that characterised any of the other labs and workspaces. There was a very good reason for this, although it would fit three times over into the Bridge it's real size was unimportant. As soon as the holographic generators were activated the room seemed to expand into infinity and the entire known Universe would be available for study. Amy entered and took in the cosy little space then activated the modelling programme for the first time. "Computer, run program Epsilon Four, Lloyd 3418." Amy stood in the centre of the room and waited for the momentary dizziness that always accompanied endlessness opening up before her. "Whoah !" It never failed to impress her. She appeared to be standing in mid-air, the only solid thing was the console in front of her. "Computer, centre on the current position of the Leviathan. Now I'd like some background music please. Vulcan baroque I think." She watched with interest as a tiny version of the ship she was currently aboard popped into view and the familiar strains of Sadek's third started. "Now I want to set the sensors to a wide range, broad spectrum scan. Target ...hmmm ...at your discretion." <Standard sweep initiated.> The computer relayed raw data to a terminal in the middle of the room. Amy had decided that for her first sweep she should have a general look around to see what was out there and to see if anything was worth further attention. The data flashed across her terminal recording the state of the Universe at that moment. Something unusual caught her eye and she reached out to into the simulated universe check that area of space. "Computer zoom in on the area I am indicating. Oh now that really is beautiful." She muttered as she watched a supernova in the vicinity of the Cartwheel Galaxy appear. "OK ... Computer, Let's look at Sol." Amy liked to calibrate all her equipment against the most studied star known to Starfleet. She had spent her first few days aboard pulling down general science duties and this was her first real chance to flex her astronomical muscles. Fifty minutes later and all the Stellar Cartography departments' equipment had the Lloyd stamp of approval but something wasn't quite right. Amy ran through her mental checklist of things to do and everything seemed to tally, she'd done all the tasks that she'd set herself and was feeling pretty pleased with herself when she suddenly remembered the one thing she hadn't done. She hadn't engaged in any kind of social interaction with the rest of the crew. A lead weight settled in her stomach, an icy chill ran down her back and a whole other set of clichés about dread descended on her. Given a choice between facing off a screaming horde of Nausicaans and "meeting" people she'd take the Nausicaan's any day. Unfortunately for her she didn't have a choice in the matter so she took a few deep breaths and set out to find someone to meet. |
