Computer Core

Logan and Azri walked briskly down the dimly lit corridor heading for the central computer core of Star One. Finally they reached the door to the central core and stepped inside. Neither officer was prepared for the sight that greeted them upon their entry.

The room was large and resembled some kind of science lab, not the central core of a vast starship. What was more unnerving was the fact that all of the consoles displayed not Federation, but Borg.

*Something is not right here.* Logan thought.

“Azri see if you can access the central database.” Logan suggested. “I’ll see if we can work out why all these controls are Borg.”

Suddenly there was a sound from above them and slowly something descended from the ceiling. As the chamber dropped down to the floor, inside they saw the ‘corpse’ of a female Borg. Suddenly the eyes of the Borg opened and stared back at Logan and Azri.

“Hello and welcome to Star One.” A female voice announced.

“Who are you ?” Logan enquired.

The Borg closed her eyes and appeared to be in deep thought, before her eyes opened once more.

“I don’t remember.” The Borg admitted.

“You don’t remember ?” Logan remarked.

“I know that my function is to run this ship, but I feel that there’s so much more I am capable of.” The Borg replied.

Azri meanwhile was busy attempting to access the central database.

“What is she doing ?” The Borg enquired, having noticed that Azri was attempting to access a nearby console.

“Accessing this vessels database.” Logan replied. “We’re trying to obtain more information on a device we found in one of our colleagues.”

“I’ve got access.” Azri suddenly remarked. “I have no idea how, but I’ve got full access to the ship’s database.”

“Start downloading, get as much data as you can.” Logan ordered turning back to the Borg in her glass ‘tank’. “Did you do that ?”

“You didn’t want access to the ship’s database ?” The Borg enquired.

“Yes, but why did you give it to you ?” Logan asked.

“Because it is my function.” The Borg replied. “My function is to analyse and process all data, then make it available for use against our enemies.”

Suddenly Azri remembered something from the records she’d read on the Leviathan.

“I think I know who this is ?” Azri suddenly remarked. “This is the Borg Queen, Captain Devore and the crew of the original USS Leviathan captured after the Borg attempted to invade Romulan space three years ago.”

“Romulan space….Borg.” The Borg said in a puzzled voice, as if she something had been re-awakened in her mind. “I am Borg. I was defending my vessel when I was attacked……..”

“Azri how long until the ship returns to sub-space.” Logan enquired.

“About three minutes.” Azri replied. “This download will be done in about ninety seconds.”

“I am Borg….” The Queen stated once more, with more authority. “I remember.”

Logan didn’t like the way the Borg Queen was speaking and the way her voice had changed, from a lost soul into a more authoritative tone.”

“Time to get out of here.” Logan remarked, heading for the door.

Azri picked up the tricorder and followed Logan out of the door. They headed quickly down the corridor and back to the hanger deck, but found their way blocked. Two Borg drones had appeared in front of them.

*Where did they come from ?* Logan thought to himself.

The drones where obviously former Starfleet officers, one looked human whilst the other Bolian. Both walked towards Logan and Azri.

“We are Borg, you will be assimilated. Your biological distinctiveness will be added to our own.” A voice announced.

Logan reached for the phaser and fired, but to not avail as the energy was absorbed by the Borg’s shields.

*They must have already adapted to my phaser.* Logan remarked to himself.

He’d not come prepared to be fighting Borg drones, so his phaser was just a plain old standard issue phaser. Then he remembered the weapon Rashad had given him and pulled it out.

Aiming straight at the first Borg, he fired. The lancer sent out a single smart bullet which passed straight through the drones shields and after imbedding itself in it’s body, exploded. The blast was enough to knock the second drone off balance and down on the floor.

Logan and Azri jumped over the fallen drones and headed onward. Two more drones appeared behind them and Logan fired twice more, killing both drones. Eventually they reached the Hellcat and as soon as the airlock was closed behind them, ordered Rahel and Rashad to get them out now.
