Kren never knew his father, who was executed in 2359 six months before Kren was born. The house of Rustazh had just been offered a seat on the Klingon high council, which his father as head of the house was to take. However, Klingon Intelligence uncovered something the the house of Rustazh that had lain unknown for over a century. Kren's great grandfather was found to have collaborated with the Romulans and taken a Rapier class scout to Romulus, providing the Romulans with a fully working warp-capable vessel. The house of Rustazh covered up the evidence, claiming that the vessel was destroyed by the Romulans and only three Klingons were aware of the deception. The high council ordered the complete extermination of the house of Rustazh, but Duchak was able to save his new wife and unborn son. Duchak was a honoured Klingon warrior and seen by many of the Klingons who served with and under him as being destined for greatness. He managed to contact his former first officer, Totlh Krak'targ of the house of Kharazh, who took Tax'Kha into his own house and away to the small province of 'Nak'Tar' on Qo'noS. When Kren was born, he claimed him as his own son and giving him the name Kren Sutai of the house of Kharazh Klingon Intelligence covered up the extermination of the house of Rustazh and did not discover that Kren and his mother had survived until 2370. By then Gowron had been made the leader of the Klingon high council and had served with Duchak Rustazh for many years, knowing that he was a great Klingon. He ordered that the existence of Kren be covered up and any one making enquiries about Kren or the Rustazh house were to be eliminated. Kren grew up a fairly normal Klingon and as his adopted father was a Sa' (Equivalent to a Starfleet Vice Admiral) he was placed into the Klingon military academy as soon as he reached the right age. After many years learning the ways of the Klingon warrior, he was assigned to the Klingon Imperial navy and placed aboard the IKS Blue Fire. There he served for two years as the weapons office until in 2380 the HoD (Captain) of the Blue Fire and his senior officers turned traitor. Many of the junior crew along with the first officer wanted to mutiny against the Captain, but Kren a few others wanted no part in either side. They managed to escape the ship in one of the shuttle pods, whilst the two sides battled against each other. The Blue Fire was destroyed in the battle with all hands lost. Kren and his colleagues managed to reach an M-class planet where they surrendered to the Federation authorities and claimed asylum. They were transported back to Earth and after a year of careful investigation were allowed to become Federation citizens. Kren learnt of Lieutenant Commander Worf during his time in the asylum centre and when he was finally released, he took his true fathers name once more and applied to join Starfleet. He was accepted at the academy in 2381, where he became only the fourth Klingon to pass through the doors. Kren's time at the academy was fairly uneventful, the tutors and the students both accepted him as just another student, even though he was the only Klingon in his year. The next Klingon to attend the academy didn't arrive until Kren was in his final year. He concentrated on the tactical program and graduated with honours in alien weapon systems and self-defence. His tutors where however a little disappointed with his overall performance through the academy, feeling that maybe he was not giving his all. After graduating, he was assigned to the USS Leviathan-B, a newly commissioned Meteor class vessel and the only starship in the Federation equipped with a working Quantum Slipstream drive. It was hoped that by placing him on a large vessel, his skills and performance would be raised to the level that his academy tutors thought he was capable of.

He has a high distrust of all members of Klingon Inteligence and the members of the High council, partially because of what they did to his family house. Although most Klingons probably have no idea about the house of Rustazh or what happened to it, there are many in the high council who would love to know where the last few remain. He does however honour all the Klingon traditions and his mother and step-father have both instilled a certain Klingonness into his character. This includes the honour of the house name and he has deemed to one day restore the house of Rustazh and regain their rightful place on the high council.

Kren has learnt all the traditional forms of Klingon martial arts and is proficient in the use of the Bat'leth and d'k'tahg He has also learnt several human martial arts. Whilst at the academy, he was introduced to several human games, including poker and chess, both of which he has found an intellectual challenge. The Klingons had a game known as Klin'zha, which was very similar to chess and Kren . During his youth Kren actually participated in a version of this Klingon games, known as Klin'zha Kinta, which uses real players in place of the pieces. Klin'zha Kinta is susally played by high ranking officers in the Klingon military and the pieces are usually young cadets. It is a great honour to be chosen to participate as the game and is seen as a test of a young cadet's fighting prowess. It has often been said that the players often pick their future officers from how the pieces perform on the board. In Klin'zha, when two pieces land on the same square, who wins is decided by a complex set of rules involving the type of piece and a throw of a pair of dice. In the Klin'Kha Kinta version, when two players land on the same square, they actually fight until one player is knocked to the ground or forced out of the square. The weapons each piece carries are designed not to cause serious damage, but are stil capable of causing minor injuries.
