Mike continued to talk to the dolphin after Nick and Brenton had left, but his eight year old attention span soon wandered. Nonchalantly moving over to his dad's computer Mike worked through the channels and hailed his mom somewhere in the Alpha Quadrant on some ship he remembered being named after a golf tournament.
"Hi mommy."
"Hi sweetheart, how are you?"
"I'm okay. Nick did it again."
"Did what?"
"His pass out thing."
"Hmmm. Did he get hurt?"
"No. Daddy caught him."
"What did daddy say about it?"
"Nuthin. He's talkin to Nick's doctor now."
"What are you doing?"
"Talkin to Whistle."
"Who's Whistle?"
Suddenly Mike turned the monitor to show his mom the dolphin hanging around outside the underwater observation dome.
"See him?"
"Yeah. So he's a dolphin?"
"Looks like one but I don't think he is exactly. He was already here when all the people came. He says he remembers before the people came."
"Remembers what?"
"He says Nick was here first."
"Oh, you mean he saw Nick first?"
"No, mommy, before all the other people came he said Nick came and talked to him first."
"So how is school going?"
"I got a stupid Dynamath handout to do."
"What's it on?"
"Exponents."
"If you need any help just call me.... Ok?"
"Sure mom. I always call you. More than Nick does."
"That's all right. You guys call me when you feel you need too, and you want to more then Nick."
"Ok mommy, that's all I have to say. I wanna talk to Whistle and play some games. Bye."
"Bye.... mouse."
Brenton walked into the room as Mike was thumbing the monitor off.
"Whatcha doin, buddy?"
"Just talkin to mommy."
"Did she call while I was with Nick?"
"No, I called her."
"How did you know what to do?"
"I just did, dad."
Brenton made yet another mental note to himself to be careful when the boys were around. They seemed to pick up on a hell of a lot more then they let on about.
