"Rolling Stone"

Author: Lt. Mal Dorden
Earthdate: April 28, 2386
Location: USS Rohirrim

Captain John Larkin knew Lt.j.g Dorden was on his way to his Ready Room. He knew this because the deck shook and several pictures fell off their hangings on the wall. The door chimed soon after and he put down the PADD he'd been working on.

"Come."

The door slid open with the customary slight hiss, and Lt.j.g Dorden entered. He had to stoop first and turn slightly to fit his massive frame through the door, before coming to stand in front of Larkin's desk. He didn't offer Dorden a seat, knowing that the Brikar preferred to remain standing rather than trying to fold himself into a chair. Besides, he didn't think any of his furniture could take the strain of Dorden sitting on it. Once again he was impressed by the size of the Brikar. Dorden shared the usual features of the Brikar, thick brown skin, with a small head and very little neck, and a huge muscular body -- they seemed built for roles in Security, though for some reason Dorden had chosen a medical career instead.

"Ah Lieutenant, I was just looking over your request for a transfer to a planetary colony. It's been accepted, we'll be dropping you off at Serenity Colony on our way to our next assignment. But I still don't know why you asked for a transfer, would you care to enlighten me?"

"No."

Larkin let out a sigh.

"That wasn't a request, Lieutenant, it was an order."

"Oh. I was bored."

Larkin was slightly taken aback by this. He'd gotten used to the Brikar's surly manner over the last few years he'd served on the Rohirrim, but still this wasn't the answer he was expecting.

"You entered a transfer because you were bored? Do you really think that's a good reason to change assignments?"

Dorden shrugged, or at least gave the Brikar version of a shrug, the lack of any real neck hampering the attempt.

"Very well, your transfer has been approved, good luck on your new assignment, Lieutenant, we're scheduled to arrive at Serenity Colony within four hours, so you'd best get packing."

Dorden tilted his upper torso, which passed for a nod, before turning and leaving. The door slid shut behind him, and once again Larkin felt the tremors on the deck that indicated Dorden was walking.
