"Two More Days"

Author: Commodore Rick Hunter
Earthdate: May 13, 2386
Location: Hunter's office

Commodore Rick Hunter leaned back in his comfortable leather chair, closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The last few days had been extremely trying, starting with the attack on President Carlyle's ship. From there things had just gone from bad to worse. The G'kra High Commissar had threatened to cancel the treaty signing, whoever it had been who had launched the missiles at Starfleet One was still on the loose, and an assassin had made another attempt at the President's life while he lay in the hospital recuperating from the first attack.

On the brighter side, Jack Lashmore had thwarted the presidential assassin's mission, he had Aegis-Hall out scouring the countryside for the terrorists, the assassin was in the detention center being interrogated by Starfleet Intel, and Mr. West was doing his part in keeping the G'kra happy with his booming yorna berry jam business.

That morning, West had (with considerable embarrassment) confided in Hunter and told him that he'd made a 'deal' with the Vesputians to keep them informed of important happenings on the planet in exchange for the berries. More like they're blackmailing him after catching him trespassing in their fields... Rick chuckled silently to himself. That's what he gets for trying to be sneaky, he thought smugly.

Still, in this case it was definitely a good idea to keep the Vesputians in the loop, since they housed a good portion of the G'kra delegation at their monastery. He had passed all the intel he could lay his hands on to West so he could in turn deliver it to Kalmar Torek. The terrorists had already tried to shoot down the President's ship and murder him; there was no telling what they would try next, no way to know if they would dare an attack on the Vesputian monastery. He hoped not, but you never could tell with terrorists.

The treaty signing that would officially bring the G'kra Republic into the fold of the United Federation of Planets was scheduled for the day after tomorrow. Everything was ready. Security had been doubled again around sensitive areas. There were even armed Marines marching through the streets of the city.

Two more days. Then it would all be over and everything would return to normal. All they had to do was survive the next two days.
