It was good to be home, the young Vulcan Science Officer sighed. He was also relieved to know that his father was once again where he wanted to be, back on the Vengeance. Returning home meant he had missed a lot of work to which himself, Gunney and Corporal Smith would definitely be burning the midnight oil for many nights.
That also meant reporting back in to his commanding officer, Commodore Hunter.
"Commodore, Lt. Tyvek reporting for duty."
"Welcome back, Mr. Tyvek. Excellent work in the Patch. Captain Nala was most impressed with your skills. I understand that your father has returned there for treatment," replied Hunter.
"Yes sir. Metaphasic radiation actually. It is being called the next fountain of youth. Doctor Zahn believes that it will regenerate my father's DNA and reverse the effects of Bendii syndrome," Tyvek replied.
"Let's hope so. So are you up for a new assignment?" asked Hunter.
"Always."
Saitek could not help but return to the bridge despite the fact he was no longer the Captain. Captain Nala was very proficient and had been an excellent XO, but he couldn't help but wish he was once again sitting in the center seat.
"Captain, we are entering the perimeter to the Patch," the Deltan helmsman reported.
"Drop warp to space normal speed. Science officer, have you detected coordinates to the largest concentration of metaphasic radiation?" the Captain deemed.
"Confirmed, ma'am. Thirty thousand kilometers ahead," the Andorian officer replied.
"Helm, plot course and engage. Captain Saitek, we will be arriving to that spot in a few minutes, you may want to return to sickbay," Nala replied.
Saitek entered the turbo lift and was just about to ask the elevator to take him to sickbay when the whole ship began to rattle apart from an explosion. An explosion which slung him downward.
The viewer then revealed three Breen ships decloaking.
"Red Alert!" commanded Nala.
"Captain, the mains are down, we've struck a gravitic mine," helm reported.
[Captain, those SOB's knew just where to hit us,] the engineer reported over the radio.
All three ships began an assault on the large hulk causing her to list.
"Captain, we're losing the shields. Recommend we abandon ship," the Tactical officer added.
"No! Captain Nala, allow the M-9 to evaluate the situation," Saitek suggested.
"Saitek, the M-9 has been taken off line," Nala replied.
"Then reboot it. Computer?"
>YES, CAPTAIN SAITEK?<
"Activate the M-9."
>M-9 reactivated.<
"M-9!"
{Yes, Captain Saitek?}
"Please scan the current terror threat and take appropriate defensive perimeters," Saitek replied.
The working modems of the M-9 evaluated the terror threat as requested and immediately to control the ship. With minimal power available the M-9 armed three quantum torpedoes and fired them at a cloud of antimatter material within the Patch. As it detonated the resulting explosion of preanimate radiation erupted and solarly flared toward two of the nearest Breen vessels resulting in the explosion of one and damage to a second.
"Captain the M-9 did it. The third has cloaked and is moving off," the Deltan reported.
Nala was stunned.
"Forgive me Nala, I encoded my voice pattern into the M-9 main frame. I guess I forgot to wipe it clean," Saitek apologized.
"Your actions saved the ship," she replied.
"No, it was the M-9. Computer, deactivate the M-9," added Saitek.
>SYSTEM DEACTIVATED.<
Saitek entered the lift and took it down to sickbay. He would wait there once the Vengeance was up and running again.
