It had been nearly two full days since Richard had arrived on Serenity. It had been a day since he had been reunited with his old friend from the days of the Star Fleet Rangers. He also met his staff, a rather impressive bunch of young officers.
The Security office was located near the beginning of the Starfleet District. It was rather big. Upon entering the office was a front desk manned by the Duty Chief. Behind a door was the Chief of Security office. To the left of the front desk was the Security briefing room that looked like a starship senior officers lounge, with a table and seating for eleven.
That was the briefing room. Behind that was the armory, accessible only to Commander Wallace and Commodore Hunter.
The brig was located behind a series of doors to the right of the front desk. It contained eight holding cells and each cell was equipped with food replicators. The cells were also equipped with level 3 force fields. They would deliver enough of a jolt to knock a Klingon out for twenty minutes.
Richard was sitting in his office which had yet to be decorated reading a few of the daily reports. Nothing really serious, just petty crimes. When Chief Peter Kirkland came into his office. The two were close friends while in Special Forces.
"Excuse me, sir. There is a cadet that wishes to report for duty, sir. He's been rather overzealous in my opinion." Chief Kirkland found it hard to believe to be working with his old friend and more so calling him sir. To him it felt strange.
"Very well, Chief. Show him in," Richard said putting his PADD down.
A young man no more than twenty walked in wearing the standard cadet uniform with the yellow top. He stood maybe 5 foot 6 and was perhaps 145 pounds soaking wet. Wallace noticed he was Bajoran also.
"Cadet 2nd Class Toyran Kerdin reporting for duty, sir." Cadet Toyran stood perfectly at attention with his hand on his orders.
"Stand easy, Cadet. May I see your orders, son?" Wallace asked standing up and extended his hand out to take the PADD once handed to him by the Cadet.
Wallace took it and read over the orders and gave a friendly smile. "Yes it appears you're here until June of next year. Seems you're a little eager for this assignment. I know school is a little dull, but relax you're going to fall face first standing like that." Wallace turned towards his friend Pete seeing a huge wet spot on the stomach of his tunic.
"Chief, did you have an accident with your lunch?"
Pete gave a scowl and replied." No sir, someone is a little clumsy."
Richard turned back to the cadet who was having a look of disbelief, giving Wallace the idea the Cadet had spilled the liquid on the Chief.
"Well, Cadet. Welcome to Serenity, son. I have a job for you. I need someone to inventory the cargo docks on the spaceport. It'll take an hour or two. Then fill the usual report. I know it's not the fun you'd hope for but you could and need to get use to the paperwork part of being an officer. You're dismissed, Cadet." Richard expected the kid to be a little disappointed but he seemed happy with his first assignment.
Chief Kirkland turned and then took a seat as the security monitor to Wallace's office came on and Commodore Hunter's face appeared.
"Sir, what's going on, sir?"
[Well, sort of good news. The Sutherland found an old Mulluran space station 20 light years from here. It seems to be orbiting an M-class planet. The Sutherland was unable to explore the area due to something that came up. However they sent a probe and I'm downloading it to your computer.
Take a small detachment and a runabout and investigate the station, and if possible the planet. I'm sending you to lead this mission, Commander. I feel your experience is valuable in case something pops up. You'll leave tomorrow at 0930 hours. Good luck. Hunter out.]
Finally, an assignment that has unknown possibilities seemed to have Richard's heart pumping faster. "Chief, I want you, that Cadet, and two others. You chose the other two. I'll be busy with studying the information. I want the six of us will meet here for a briefing at 0830 hours. Dismissed."
Richard turned his computer on and began reading the information that was obtained by the Sutherland.
