"Lake Town Security"

Author: Ensign's Skaren & Demarco
Earthdate: August 18, 2386
Location: Lake Town Security

T'learn Demarco stood on the tarmac of the small space port on the outskirts of Lake Town and read the large informational kiosk. Skaren walked down the ramp with his own bags of belongings. A young woman sitting in a ground transport waved at them as they stood reading the sign.

"Built partly on the shores of Blue Lake and partly on pontoons and stilts above the lake itself, Lake Town's primary export is fish. It also serves as a base for explorations further into the continent's interior and is a very popular tourist destination. The main street is lined with souvenir shops and hotels. The tallest building (three stories) in the entire town is the Ogopogo Inn. A small spaceport/airport services the settlement.

Local folklore says Blue Lake is home to a lake monster named Ogopogo in honor of the legendary lake monster in Canada on Earth, and much of the tourist trade is dependent on sales of Ogopogo memorabilia.

Starfleet maintains a small field office in Lake Town, near the spaceport.

An old cemetery lies some distance southeast of Lake Town on the edge of the Cairn Hills. The graveyard is ancient, used by the very first settlers on Serenity more than three hundred years ago. Nowadays it is almost forgotten by almost everyone, and local legends claim the area is haunted by the ghosts of those buried here."

Both security officers walked the short distance to the ground car and the drive said, "Security?"

T'learn nodded and tossed her two duffels into the back of the car and started climbing in as Skaren followed suit.

Skaren loaded his belongings in the ground car and sat down next to the driver, wriggling with his long legs. "They do not make these things for people my size, do they?" he said gruffly and frowned when the driver opened his mouth to protest on his comment.

"Who's bright idea was it to send us to this place anyway?" he asked while the driver rode them to their destination. "It is more like a vacation, I would rather work on the space station than here." He stared at the surroundings, and sighed. He would not show much patience with the people here, that much was clear.

"Do you believe the nonsense about that monster?" he asked, having read what was on the pillar in the space port. His look was deadly serious.

"No. However, there may be some indigenous life form that we have yet to meet. If you don't swim in the lake the chances of you scaring it is null," she said with a flat voice as they bumped along the multi tracked road into the town.

Their guide spoke, "It's been some time since we've had security officers here... the last one drowned while diving in the lake several weeks ago. His quarters have been cleared out and the other apartment has been cleaned and aired recently in preparation for your arrival. We aren't a very large community but the space port is very active. There are 5,000 people who live in the city and we export fish and other food stuffs via the space port where you landed."

She drove for a few more minutes and Skaren keep noticing the looks they were getting from people they passed and he growled and T'learn shook her head. She remembered the week they had spent on the planet going though the special high intensity training with the special ops unit from SB901.

They arrived and stopped in front of a building that looked like modules had been tacked on as needed. "The Security office is here on the corner," she pointed across the way and said, "that's the INN, and that's the emergency medical facility/fire/ and marine rescue department. The hospital is in the castle up on the hill. There are apartments scattered around but the main pier is at the bottom of this road. This vehicle is yours. You're apartments are on the second floor above your office. Delia is your dispatcher and she's off today but will be here tomorrow. Bye."

Both officers grabbed their bags and walked into an unsecured office and found a note on the desk with two old fashioned keys. "I'm beginning to agree with you about this place, Skaren." She picked up one key and saw the internal stairwell and started climbing and the landing at the top split and there were two doors. She stuck her key in the slot and it didn't fit and so with a disdainful shake of her head she tried the other knob and found it fit and gave the door a push and a basic apartment was there before her... equipped with the most ancient replicator. She entered and set her bags down and walked around the one bedroom apartment and noticed she had a view of the lake and the castle on the hill.

Skaren grunted and put his key in the door that was closed in front of him.

Haven't they ever heard of a simple code lock?" he growled and when the door did not open quickly enough he kicked against it, to vent his frustration. It went open alright, a bit too well, because he now had the complete door in his hand. He groaned and put the door against the wall outside, and entered his room. He threw his bags down and mumbled a few angry Klingon swears. He saw T'learn's surprised face in his door and rolled his eyes.
