"Back To Duty"

Author: Cmdr. Richard Wallace
Earthdate: August 30, 2386
Location: Federation Hospital

Richard and the rest of USS Benjamin Franklin were back on Serenity. Most and nearly all the injured crew had left the hospital. Richard was sitting in a exam room awaiting Lieutenant William Hancock to check his shoulder's recovery. Richard had spent the last 4 days off duty and this didn't sit well with him.

The exam room door opened and the young Medical doctor walked in. "Good morning Commander Wallace. How do we feel today?" The Lieutenant's Earth English accent was rather heavy and hard to miss.

"My shoulder is normal again. Did my three hour workout this morning. No pain." Richard said as he moved his right arm back and forth and then rotated it.

"Excellent Commander. I'll put you back on duty then." Doctor Hancock said giving Richard a quick last scan and found nothing. Upon completing that he entered a few things into his PADD and sent it to Commodore Hunter's office.

"Thank you Lieutenant. If there won't be anything else. I'll be heading back to my office. God knows the work load that awaits me." Richard replied standing up and walking out of the office.

Richard walked into his office and saw Lieutenant Shara Mikori sitting at his desk and was a little puzzled, his face showed his puzzlement. She quickly snapped to her feet.

"Sorry sir I was working on a few reports for you to go over when you returned to duty. Make your work load a little bit easier."

"At ease Lieutenant, thank you. Would like to basically summarize them for me?" Richard said walking over to the replicator and ordering his cup of coffee.

"Well nothing as exciting as Breen and Nasicuin pirates. Just a few bar room brawls. And right now Chief Kirkland and myself are working on a investigation." Mikori informed her boss.

"Really what kind of investigation?" Richard sipped his coffee then blew on the top of the liquid.

"Smuggling sir. Cadet Tyran found a bio neural gel and some equipment to make weapons out of while working the Cargo Port. We've found on the cargo containers that the ship is registered to a Bolian. The ship is scheduled to arrive later this afternoon in the Space Port. Would you like to take over the investigation sir?"

"No it's you and the Chief's. Why was the Cadet in the Cargo Port again?" Wallace was curious to know why he had to pull that duty twice.

"He's an idiot. Sir."

"Please do explain?" Wallace said taking a seat behind his desk.

"He nearly caused a major incident with Serenity's Police force. A Engineer was off duty drinking and caused a fight. Well since the Man was off duty nothing we could do. Oh but not mister academy. He told three police officers he was going to arrest them under interstellar law." Shara's tone was rather clear to Wallace.

Damn kid is a bit of a character.

"Thanks Lieutenant. Your dismissed."

Rest of the day went uneventful for Richard until around the time it was for Richard to come of duty. He had walked down to the Space Port and saw that Lieutenant Mikori had arrested a Bolian and a Remus. The Remus had a cracked open lip and appeared to be having missed a few of his teeth.

At one of the Ports a Civilian ship was unloading passengers. One of these passengers was a 71 year old human male. He was wearing a business suit, carried a small suit case. He asked one of the Star Fleet personnel a question. "Excuse me Soldier? Where could I find a Commander Richard Wallace?"

The young Star Fleet Personnel was Cadet Tyran. " Excuse me sir, I do know where Commander Wallace is. But my I ask why do you want him?"

"Oh there he is. Gotten a little heavy hasn't he? Because boy I am his father." Mister Wallace walked over towards his son yelling."Ricky, Ricky. Come say hello to your father.

Oh god know. It can't be, 25 years not seeing him and only two letters in that time can't be nope. Richard turned and around and saw his father. His hair had changed mostly gone it was. He had grown allot older too.

Be nice Commander. Maybe he's dying and wants to make amends. Nope not that damn lucky.

"Hello Sir." Richard said with a shallow and not genuine smile.
