Chief Medical Officer of the Hades glared at Jayme as she rushed through the door just before being declared late. Jayme came to attention in front of Dr. Hali Danar. "Change and have a seat on the bio-bed, Major."
"Yes, Ma'am, " Jayme said noting that Nathan was already going over Storm. Jayme laid down on the bed and tried to relax and not fidget. "Didn't we just do this seven days ago, Colonel?"
Aidan was sitting on the biobed as Dr Fletcher had asked. Glancing up as he ran yet another scan. "So what prompted the full physical? And what's your Professional opinion on my physical state?"
"Your behaviour and activity level prompted this exam. Too soon to tell, lay back down and relax. He scanned and then manipulated the wrist and checked nerve function and watched the Major jump with each shock. "Any numbness or pain with use?"
She tried to relax but found that difficult. "Maybe just a little., not really numbness per say but some pain," Aidan confessed. More than anything that fact bothered her.
"You have normal nerve function and sensitivity. Its just going to take time for it to strengthen."
He moved on to palpating and checking her ribs, shoulder, neuro checks, and then moved down to her leg and repeated his ortho-neuro exams. "Any pain or problems with balance or strength?"
Aidan sighed, "More noticeable than my wrist is but not any balance or strength problems that immediately show up. Nothing that keeps me from walking or normal movement at any rate."
"The fracture hasn't healed completely, and any benefit you got from the metropan injection earlier this week has been undone by your stunt last night--there are new micro fractures in the new bone. I recommend repeating the IO medication, now and total non weight bearing activities for two weeks."
For a moment Aidan looked rather terrified more than anything else. "Another metropan treatment? Total non-weight bearing, the how am I supposed to get around for the simplest everyday necessities?"
"Not my problem, Major. You're the one who decided to workout beyond your rehab limits."
"Listen I know you are the medical expert here but that last time through was almost more than I could take. It left me in tons of pain and very Nauseous. Is there any way to reduce those side effects? Not to mention feeling as if I'd run a marathon and I hadn't moved at all."
"Hate to be mean, but maybe you'll remember that the next time you decide to go it on your own and do your own thing..." Nathan said making some notes on his PADD.
Finally she conceded, "After we check on your wife. Something tells me my mother has a good reason for taking longer than a normal physical should take or that something else caught her attention. I realize I screwed up big time but all you had to do was mention the metropan and I've learned my lesson, believe me. All that matters is getting back to flying. While I maybe a marine I don't repeat my mistakes."
Nathan looked in that direction where he knew his wife was and nodded, and said, "Okay."
Hali looked at the scans she was running and comparing them to each of the ones that she'd run the first time. "And we are doing it all again, but this should be the last time you see me--after this your care will be assumed by Dr. Bentara."
Jayme held out her arm and let her draw a blood sample, and then answered her questions to evaluate her neuro status. She felt Hali's hands on her abdomen and she felt the baby's position and movement, and then heard Hali ask, "Any changes in movement?"
"Moving all the time...and then there has been Intermittent cramping and a lower back ache, why?" Jayme asked raising her head off the bed and looking at the doc.
"Lay back down Major. How long have you had these symptoms? And has there been any spotting?"
She relaxed back down and watched the doc adjust the tricorder. "Last couple of days, and no spotting. The cramps go away with rest. I thought they were braxton-hicks contractions."
"What brings on these contractions?" Hali asked palpating her abdomen.
"Nightmares, and sessions with the psych's, and working out to hard." Jayme watched as she attached to electrodes to her abdomen and ran a strap under her lower back and over the electrodes. "Why are you setting up for a non stress test?"
"Did you have these last night when you decided to go to bed, instead of visiting with my husband and I?"
"Yes. How long are you going to monitor?" Jayme whined, and noticed that Aidan and Nathan were walking over.
Hali looked at the rest of her scans and said, "You are six months along and in pre-term labour. I'll watch you for the next couple of hours--give meds and see if we can stop it. Noticed you haven't taken your meds or eaten, let me get that arranged and then we can find you something to read."
Nathan walked over and noticed the set up and frowned, "Jayme??"
"Just having a few minor contractions...just a precaution. I'm going to be here a while can you get some of my study materials from our quarters? And how did Aiden do with her physical?"
Aidan finished dressing then noticed Jayme lying there as well. "I'm interesting to find out his opinion on my physical as well.." Then she paused as she noticed Jayme lying there hooked up to some monitors. "How are you doing is the more important question?"
"It's nothing... just a few extra movements from the baby." Jayme looked up at the rest of the monitors and sighed and when Hali returned took the meds and looked at the meal tray and smiled up at Nathan. "What?"
Dr Danar crossed her arms over her chest and said, "you know better; you're in your final semester and residency...yet you went out and pulled that damn stunt last night working out with a Marine company Karate class which is no walk in the park and then lied and then pretended nothing was wrong... You are twenty percent effaced and dilated. You are on light duty, no more then 4 hr shifts--and only three a week, no going into the field for manoeuvres-- from now until delivery, only working out is walking at a moderate pace or swimming."
Aidan said nothing though she'd clearly suspected something more was going on than Jayme wanted to admit. Having grown up with a doctor in the family she knew all to well when her mother was being dead serious.
"No." Jayme said trying to sit up when Aidan rested her hand on friends shoulder. "I guess we were really bad girls yesterday. Consider our hands slapped." She rested her hand behind her head and relaxed. "Aidan please, go sit down and let Nathan treat your leg, please?"
"Yeah we royally screwed up but I'll tell you something I'm not too keen on the idea of under going another round of IO medication given the fact it reminded my why I never want to have to endure morning sickness." Then she met Jayme's and Nathan's gaze. "Fine lets just get the metropan over with."
Aidan returned to a biobed more than a bit nervous about the impending procedure. It wasn't fun the first time and she really didn't expect this one to be any better.
Nathan kissed his wife and followed the pilot back to the biobed. Sit down, draw your knees up, wrap your arms around them and rest your forehead on your knees and take slow deep breathes. As he told her to Aidan sat on the biobed curled up into a ball. He lifted her shirt and felt down her spine as Aidans mother watched, he administered a hypospray of pain med and numbing agent. She hissed and fought the urge to sit straight up or to squirm and then suddenly her legs went numb and she almost fell off the biobed.
Not prepared at all for him to have chosen that method to administer the medications. It caught Aidan's attention as she lost her balance. Thankfully someone was there to prevent her from hitting the ground when she fell.
He laid her back down and went to her leg and started with numbing the skin in several places, then sterilized the whole leg from the groin to the ankle. He noticed that her eyes kept drifting closed and he hit her with another hypospray of Tarekine, and ran a tricorder scan. Five minutes later he was performing the IO injection to the femur and tibia. He sucked on his lower lip for a minute then requisitioned the necessary materials to place her in a surgically fitted brace that went from her groin to her ankle which would guarantee that she wouldn't use that leg. She also couldn't remove the brace because it was screwed into the bone.
Aidan was out cold so she thankfully didn't feel anything Nathan did. Of course she wouldn't be happy about the brace when she awoke.
He walked over to sit and talk with Jayme while Aidan slept off the meds. He knew she would have the same response Jayme did when he fixed her knee and had her in the same type of splint. "Okay Jayme, are you ready to be reasonable? 24 weeks is way to early to be delivering this baby. I'll have Karissa lock you in Paladin for the next two months of enforced bed rest if I have to." He took her hand and gave it a squeeze.
She sighed and then said, "no, I'm okay with staying in quarters. I'll just have my computer slaved to my desk at home and can work carefully and Sara can continue to do my running around. You'll be there right?"
"You bet!"
Sometime later Aidan finally awoke. Carefully and slowly she tried to sit up. Then she noticed her leg was in a brace. After earlier she felt suitably chastized so the brace didn't help anything. "Crutches would have been enough of a reminder. How long am I in this blasted thing?"
"Two weeks, and then I'll remove it, Major Danar. In the mean time here are your crutches. I suggest you either take a nap here or return to your quarters--I'll have a nurse walk you there when you're ready to leave."
