With a deep sigh Kaley glanced at the mess that was her new home. For now it would have to do. Not giving up hope of getting an actual house or condo closer to Serenity city but that wasn't something to be concerned with presently. As she stood there, she reached down to rub her back.
Just four weeks ago Lt McKenzie had met with her advisor at Starfleet Medical to say she wasn't returning to classes next semester. The opportunity on Serenity had come through only the day before that fateful meeting. Kaley needed time to get her life in order. While her advisor could certainly understand that she'd also indicated that a call would be put into the appropriate individuals including her new CO. Commander Cassie Trian wanted to see Kaley finished her last year of medical school somehow. She was too good of a student to lose.
Things were complicated by the fact she was now 5 ½ months pregnant but looked a lot larger than that. Since the news of Dale's disappearance her condition was being carefully monitored. Just prior to her departure for the assignment with the Rapid Response Medical Unit on Serenity, Kaley learned she was actually carrying twins. Certainly not something she'd expected to hear.
Not yet over the shock of that rather unexpected revelation. The fact that there would be two infants to raise by herself, still didn't register in her conscious mind. Granted a large part of her still wanted a second opinion even though there was enough proof already. Almost sure that wasn't her rational side talking. Of course Kaley also wasn't sure if one existed any longer since she still appeared to be in a state of shock over it all.
Finally Kaley had to sit down. Her ankles were swollen in addition to her back hurting. So aside from her life being a total mess Kaley still had a job that required her attention. One hand came to rest on a PADD resting on her desk. Two patients required her attention Major Jayme Alcon and Major Aidan Danar. Since the latter was still at Paladin Medical Center she could concentrate on Jayme's case right away. By coincidence or some other twist of fate the Major Alcon also happened to be her new CO.
Hopefully she'd be able to get a good night's rest and start fresh in the morning. Restful sleep now that was another story altogether.
