Adama walked through the corridors of the Starfleet facility towards the office of the Commodore. He’d spent the past week travelling to Serenity, using that time to review every piece of information he could gather. Some of what he’d read surprised him, whist other information concerned him.

The first thing that worried him was the resignation of Commodore Hunter, especially as he’d resigned on the same day as Adama had been appointed as planetary governor for the New Canada system. They had had their differences over the years, but Adama thought that Hunter was stronger than that. Of course he’d not seen the resignation letter Hunter had made, so his motivations weren’t clear to Adama.

The second thing that worried him was the fact that Serenity was severely undermanned, both on a military and a civilian level. That made Serenity an open target for the pirates that were now a major threat to the Federation.

As he approached the Commodore’s officer, a Starfleet Ensign noticed Adama and challenged him.

“Can I help you sir ?” Ensign Piper enquired.

“Yes.” Adama replied. “I was looking for the XO’s office.”

“And you are ?” Jamie asked.

“William Adama….” Adama replied. “…..and you ?”

As soon as Jamie heard the name, she knew who this stranger was.

“Ensign Piper, Jamie Piper sir.” Jamie replied. “I’m sorry sir, I wasn’t made aware that you would be arriving today, I’ll inform Captain K’Tag of your arrival.”

“At ease Ensign….” Adama stated. “…..just inform the XO that I have arrived.”

“Yes sir.” Jamie said, pressing an intercom button on the desk.

[Yes, Jamie ?] The rough voice of Captain K’Tag announced.

“Captain…..I have William Adama the Federation governor here to see you.” Jamie reported.

[Send him in.] K’Tag requested.

“You can go in sir.” Jamie announced, gesturing to the doors behind Adama.

“Thank you Ensign.” Adama said, turning towards the doors

Adama stepped inside and looked around the office of Captain K’Tag. The room was a little darker than most, much of the light from the window outside blocked by the huge Klingon wall hanging which covered it.

“Governor Adama.” K’Tag announced, rising from his desk. “I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.”

Adama was a little taken aback when he saw the large Klingon walking around the desk, his arm outstretched. Adama’s views on non-humans were not widely known, but he had a distrust of most aliens, especially those from outside the Federation. Adama politely shook the hand of K’Tag briefly, if K’Tag was offended when Adama pulled his hand away, he did not show it.

“Would you like a full situation briefing ?” K’Tag enquired. “I can arrange for a full staff briefing within the hour.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Adama stated. “This is just a preliminary visit to get to know the lay of the land so to speak, meet some of the key personnel. As the senior Starfleet representative, I thought I should come see you first.”

“Well I’m honoured that you should come see me first.” K’Tag stated. “Can I ask whether you will be taking over the Commodore’s old office ?”

“No.” Adama replied. “I’m arranging for an office within City hall to be made available. I am after all a civilian governor.”

“Makes sense.” K’Tag admitted. “I’m still a little unsure as to your role in Serenity, but as you said you are a civilian.”

“My role…as you put it is to ensure the safety of this system.” Adama remarked. “Which means making sure that any rogue elements that may have influence with the local area are eliminated, either through the due process of the law or by force? Serenity is on the border of Federation space, which makes it both an important first line of defence and a potential threat to the Federation from those outside.”

“We are making regular patrols of the system when we can, but we don’t have the pilots to maintain a permanent patrol roster.” K’Tag reported. “Deployment of the sensor grid within the Briar patch is progressing on schedule and about fifty percent is already online.”

“What about the Supply base ?” Adama asked.

“Construction of the Supply base is also running on schedule, the base should be fully operational by September.” K’Tag answered. “The exterior should be completed by the end of March, so we should be able to start limited operations by the end of April.”

“Good.” Adama stated. “I’m a little concerned about the lack of a regular patrol within the system, how many personnel would you need ?”

“Well we have twelve Cat’s Eye patrol vessels on station, but only enough pilots and specialists to fly three.” K’Tag remarked. “We’d need at least another nine pairing of pilot and specialists, plus over a dozen more ground staff to keep the entire fleet operational.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” Adama stated. “Maybe we could obtain some additional pilots and specialists from the Marine FARP.”

“Sir, with all due respect, I feel that involving the Marines in this could cause some problems.” K’Tag protested. “Starfleet and the Federation Marines are very competitive and aggressive towards each other. They may both fight for the Federation, but they don’t mix well.”

“Then it will be your job to ensure that things don’t get out of hand.” Adama suggested.

“Yes Sir.” K’Tag stated.

K’Tag was beginning to feel like this guy was going to be trouble, but K’Tag also had his orders. Governor Adama had full authority over the defence of Serenity and the New Canada system and it was K’Tag’s job to act as the Starfleet liaison.

“I think that covers everything for the moment Captain.” Adama said. “Unless there’s anything you’d like to added.”

“No sir.” K’Tag replied.

“Then I’ll expect a progress report on my desk next week about how you intend to increase the patrols, I’ll see if Starfleet can’t provide you with some extra personnel by then.”

Adama rose from his seat and headed out of the door.
