Adama is a tough man to deal with at times. He has a huge sense of honour, but believes that the Federation should always come first. This strong commitment to the Federation has sometimes manifested itself into an aggressive temperament.
Adama has a strong view that without Earth and the humans, the Federation would never have worked. Over time this has grown into a distrust of all non-humans, especially those from outside the Federation.
Adama started out life as a Starfleet officer, attending the Academy at the same time as Rick Hunter the former Commanding Officer on Serenity. Whilst the early part of his Starfleet record shows that he was an exemplary officer, towards the end of the first Cardassian war his agressive style of leadership was often questioned by those both above and below him.
The Admiral’s at his final court-martial had all but seen through his argument that discipline was the key to a well run ship, but Adama had always had strong backing somewhere up high within Starfleet. Instead of a prison sentence for the attempted murder of a junior officer, he was discharged from Starfleet, his disciplinary records sealed.
Adama had then gone into the political arena, working his way up to become a member of the Federation parliament. His views on Earth’s interest coming first were well known, but he always hid that fact from both the non-human parliamentarians and the general population.
In late December 2386, with the Federation under threat from alleged pirate attacks, Adama was dispatched to the New Canada sytem to take over control of all military and civilian forces beyond the Briar patch. That order had come directly from the president and upon hearing of Adama's appointment as planetary govenor, Commodore Rick Hunter handed in his resignation from Starfleet.
