Personality

Rick Hunter normally has a very mild and easy-going disposition; those serving under him have always found him very approachable. One needs to be careful however, not to mistake his casual attitude for softness or apathy. His dedication to his duty and to protect those depending on him is rock-solid and unwavering.

The only thing more important to Hunter than Starfleet is his wife of 14 years, Dee.

Hobbies and Interests

Those rare occasions where he finds he has a little time on his hands will usually see him chartering a boat so he and his wife can go deep sea fishing.

Background

Rick Hunter was born in the small town of Temecula, California. His mother was a secretary in a local small business, and his father flew Peregrine couriers, which kept him away from home for long stretches of time. As a youngster, he was allowed to accompany his father on a number of short trips, and promptly fell in love with space. From that point on, there was little doubt as to which direction his life would take him. When he was old enough, he enrolled in Starfleet Academy, since that seemed the most expedient way to get to space.

Upon graduating, he was immediately assigned to the USS Intrepid as Navigator, and for the next thirteen years, worked his way up the ranks until he was Chief Helmsman and Lieutenant Commander. Also during this time, he first met Dee-Ann McCall, a nurse aboard the Intrepid. The two liked each other and spent most of their free time together. Four years later, in 2365, the pair was split when Hunter was reassigned to the USS Kyushu as her Executive Officer and McCall was transferred to the USS Hope. In 2367, the Kyushu was destroyed at the Battle of Wolf 359, and Hunter was one of only seven survivors. Afterward, he was offered his first command, the USS Seeker, a Pathfinder class starship assigned a 10-year mission to explore the Outer Rim. He made sure Dee-Ann was on the medical staff, and in 2371, they got married.

The Seeker's mission was briefly interrupted by the Dominion War, where she participated in a number of key battles including the Battle of Chintoka and the Retaking of DS9. Afterwards, her mission of exploration resumed, during which her crew initiated a number of important first contacts. Upon the Seeker's return to Earth, Rick Hunter became an Instructor at the Academy and was given a promotion to Commodore. His wife was a consulting physician at Starfleet Medical and later taught at the Academy as well.

In 2385, the Hunters were approached by Admiral Jeffrey Pike, Chief of Operations of Starfleet's Deep Range Fleet, with a proposition. The area of space beyond the Briar Patch had been a hotbed of activity ever since the attempted patricide of the Ba'ku by the Son'a. Now, several new space empires were flexing their muscles in the sector and Starfleet needed to demonstrate a strong presence in order to maintain the balance of power in the region. Hunter was offered command of a relatively new planetary base on the colony world of Serenity, in the Serenity system. Both Rick and Dee had grown tired of teaching, so they agreed without hesitation.

Commodore Hunter resigned his commission on December 25, 2386, which was accepted a week later.
