Background

Katreya was born on Minos II to Archeologist parents. Unfortunately, when she was three, her parents died unexpectedly in an accidental collapse of an ancient building. Her brother who had also pursued archaeology kept up his work, which was a continuation of his parents. He also took on the care of his little sister and hired various tutors for her at his various digs. Though he was concerned for Treya’s safety, he couldn’t quell her interest in ancient ruins and civilizations, and after awhile he merely stopped trying. Instead he encouraged her to help him. She became the best assistant he’d ever had and was actually sad when she left for school back on Earth at Cambridge. However, her classes were quite easy for her because of the excellent education her brother had provided her. She graduated with top honors specializing in the field of ancient archaeology just like her parents and brother. She was given grants to pursue her own digs and managed to uncover a previously unknown civilization on Timuck III.

Her brother, Michael and her took time to visit each other’s digs during rainy seasons on their worlds and always had a wonderful time sharing stories and photos of what they had found. They remained close, despite their distance.

Then one day, a package arrived for her from Michael. As she opened it, inside was a handwritten journal – his – in a code only he and she knew. There were also blood stains on it that worried her. It was worse when she confirmed it was his blood. In a panic, she had left her assistant in charge, took her shuttle and took off to Michael’s dig site. When she got there, all she found was the ruins of the base camp near the dig. No one was there, only dried blood scattered around . . . Tents were wrecked, the things within tossed about. As she went to what had been her brother’s tent, it was completely turned upside down.

However, she knew where to look. In one of the upturned tables was a secret compartment that could only be locked and unlocked with DNA. As she pressed her thumb against it, opening it, she found a stone tablet within. The hieroglyphics on it were a riddle to find the temple of light. It was said to be a place of great power and riches of the Minosites before their culture mysteriously vanished. For Treya and Michael, they just wanted to find it to know the truth behind the rumors. It had also been the dream of their parents. They also suspected it was what had ended the civilization so long ago. They were two of only a handful that could read the ancient writing.

As she left the planet in her ship, she was fired upon by an unknown ship. She barely managed to escape, though her ship was damaged. But she had no idea who could be after her or why they would want what she had; even the artifact from her brother’s secret compartment. He had kept it merely to keep it for research and also to keep it from getting damaged. She knew she couldn’t go back to her own dig site after being attacked . . . and not when Michael could be dead. She had the two things that if he weren’t dead could lead her to him. Contacting her assistant, she let the woman know she was going on a family emergency and wasn’t sure when she’d be back. She then decided the best place to head was to Serenity. It was a place she could examine what she had and where she could disappear for awhile before making her next move. However, the shuttle didn’t make it and she had to be rescued by Jack Jordan.
